Hives after shower

DD11 comes out in hives front and back every single time she has a shower. Super itchy and annoying but after some time it goes away. It's been happening for a while now. She has the shower as cold as she can handle it and uses Sanex body wash. She was using another body wash and it happened then too. Never happened before age 11. She is starting to get quite a lot of acne on her face now too.

Anyone heard of anything similar? Anything we can do?

Try avoiding any body wash and just use a plain soap. Is it the shampoo/conditioner that washes on to her when she showers that causes it?

EBearhug · 24/01/2025 01:45

Depends which Sanex - some of them still contain SLS, which can be an allergen. It's an ingredients many liquid shower gels, soaps, shampoos, including some hypoallergenic ones. Definitely worth trying the plain soap idea.

Does it happen if she exercises or gets warm too? I have cholinergic urticaria

First test, shower with absolutely no soap, body wash, or shampoo. Any hives?

Same. I have to take an antihistamine before the gym. My daughter from being a baby gets hives from a shower or bath with no products at all.

Just popped Hypoallergenic Sanex into the SkinSafe App.

hypoallergenic is a lie. It contains parfum, sodium benzoate, and sodium laurel sulfate. All 3 are incredibly common allergens.

faithbuffy · 24/01/2025 01:58

@Flittingaboutagain it's an awful thing. I was on 4 antihistamines a day at one point and still couldn't wear a coat let alone exercise
I'm on Xolair injections now, life changing after 28 years of it

Thank you all so much for your replies. I knew someone on here would know. As far as I'm aware she only experiences hives after showering. Not during or after exercise. I will see what happens if she has a shower without using any Sanex or shampoo/conditioner. I'm hoping its not cholinergic uticaria.

Do you give your daughter antihistamines or just leave it?

I give her very cool showers and avoid baths for this reason. I will give her an antihistamine if we go somewhere where I cannot control the water temperature and it's hot like a foreign climate though. The antihistamine works best if you give it beforehand. But prevention is best and absolutely before bed otherwise she'll scratch in her sleep.

Happens to my DD too. She's 13 now & it started 3 years ago. Worse with hot water.
