Is circumcision necessary?

DS is 12 and has been having trouble with foreskin, waiting on doctor appointment in early feb, but I’ve been thinking, are any foreskin issues automatically treated with circumcision?

Necessary? For everything you've described? Getting it done in adolescence requires a doctor to identify that there is an issue, which I hope was the case. If you're a mum rather than AI, do tell which parts of your body you've had lopped off to better aid you in the future. Yeah sure, let's lop off a very sensitive piece of a child's skin because we can. Do you have experience with a willy of your own? If you had daughters would you let their bits be left alone just like yours? You don’t think that being born with a foreskin means that it was a part of the little human you grew? If he had functional difficulties along the line then yeah, it be would be done to help him. It beggars belief that a parent can make that decision for their child when they fancy. I found it easy to not make mine vegetarian like me or have her christened because not my choice. It's theirs.
You're either AI or a shit parent.

What a load of complete rubbish!

OP, wait and see what your GP, who has at least 7 years of modern medical training, and years of experience says. I hope it is sorted soon.

This has to be AI. It's not necessary at all

Wallywobbles · 23/01/2025 04:02

This is the answer from ChatGPT so I'm not sure that poster even has that excuse for the nonsense.

Circumcision is not universally necessary but may be recommended or practiced for cultural, religious, or medical reasons. Here’s an overview:
Medical: It is sometimes advised to address specific health concerns, such as recurring infections (e.g., balanitis) or phimosis (tight foreskin). However, these conditions can often be treated without circumcision.
Cultural/Religious: Circumcision is an important tradition in certain religions (e.g., Judaism, Islam) and cultural practices.
Health Benefits: Some studies suggest circumcision may reduce the risk of certain infections, like HIV, urinary tract infections in infancy, and penile cancer. However, these risks are generally low and can often be mitigated through good hygiene.
Ethical Considerations: Some argue against non-consensual circumcision in infants, viewing it as unnecessary surgery without the individual’s consent.

Ultimately, the decision depends on personal, cultural, and medical factors. For non-medical cases, it’s often a choice left to individuals or their families.

WTAF?

I was following the issues around FGM and MGM online a few years ago and that AI post is absolute bollards. Circumcision is only necessary if directed by a qualified doctor who has exhausted all other options to treat a medical need.

I fully agree, FGM is a disgusting immoral practice, and whilst I don’t think circumcicsion is as bad as that, it is still not right to force a boy to go through that unless they want to or it’s medically necessary. You don’t need to have a willy to know that. I don’t understand the arguement to force a child to undergo something like that against their will. Luckily their post was removed.

Thanks, do you know of any cream names like this?

1% hydrocortisone cream- multiple trade names, but that is the active ingredient. Speak to the pharmacist if unsure.

OneNimbleHam · 07/02/2025 15:39

An update, been to the GP and they have indeed recommended a topical steroid cream for stretching

My parents were against circumcision. I finally had my foreskin removed at 21. I wish it had been done before puberty.

Why?

Seafordian · 08/11/2025 14:41

It's easier if circumcision, if necessary, is done before puberty. Circumcision of teens or adults has more difficulties - embarrassment, erections straining or breaking stiches, longer recovery time. Why live for years with a problem rather than weeks or months?

What was your problem, if you don't mind my asking?

Seafordian · 09/11/2025 13:54

Tight foreskin and occasional smell.
