Amoxicillin finishing the course despite the rush

My 11 months old (with tonsillitis) developed a rush in the morning after 1.5 day of taking the antibiotics. Took him to the gp & was advised that the rush was probably from other virus & not antibiotics and that I should continue giving little one the antibiotics for 3 days at least & if the side effects persist ( also bad diarrhoea, stomach cramps etc. ) stop taking the antibiotics since little one feels better already. Came back home & little one developed further rush after further dose.

Question- did anyone stop the course of antibiotics sooner and if so, what was the outcome? Obviously I don't want for the symptoms to come back but I don't want little one to have further reactions...

I have a strong feeling that the current antibiotics do little one more damage than good and not sure what to do next...

Go back to your GP or out of hours GP. You really shouldn't stop giving antibiotics without talking to the gp first, or talk to your pharmacist for advice.

Ring 111 to organise an out of hours appointment. You need a professional to look at the rash.

You should have finished the whole course of antibiotics, you now have run the risk of them not being effective and your child may need another course of difgerent antibiotics or maybe even IV antibiotics.
Please take your child back to the GP to assess the rash and tell them you've not finished the antibiotics.

Agree you need medical advice again.

I have a strong feeling that the current antibiotics do little one more damage than good what do you mean? Your child has been prescribed antibiotics for a reason.

This^^

They may be able to assess over the phone if you can describe the rash well or can take pics. I wouldn't stop without checking first

My 2 year old had diarrhea and vomiting for 2 days when given penicillin for tonsillitis (same class of antibiotics)..I was very unwell myself so I didn't think straight. . Thankfully our GP phoned and gave different antibiotics straight away. My son got covered in a rush the following morning. I took him to A&E, they admitted him straight away in an isolation suite. No infection was found on the tests. My son now has penicillin allergy in his records. Penicillin allergy is a very serious thing. Once the immune system is primed up, penicillin allergy could kill at a later exposure. I would seek 2nd opinion regarding both the rash and potential penicillin allergy. There are other antibiotics people with penicillin allergy can take

I am allergic to amoxicillin. I come out in rashes if I take it. It is similarly on my records not to be prescribed any penicillins. Stopping the antibiotics, on this occasion, was the right thing but the doctor needs to see the baby.

Is there some reason you call it a rush?

ChilledMama85 · 18/01/2025 23:30

I already took little one to the gp with this rash & was advised that the rush is *probably not from the antibiotics ( however that was when the rash first came out. ) The rash came back straight after next dose ( after I came back from the doctors). The doctor also said if little one feels better we need to weight out the benefits of antibiotics & the side effects and that if the bad reaction continues I can stop the antibiotics after day 3 & not day 5.

Now, imo it would not be wise to continue same antibiotics if I see that there is a rash spreading after each dose as it most likely means that the body does not tolerate it.

Lets say if I was to continue, then worse side effects happen take little one to A&E with eg. breathing difficulties, the doctors would look at me with disbelief that I continued giving them same antibiotic despite knowing about that rash & other side effects that I observed.

I'll be talking to doctors again re this.

Thank you all for your advice.

I meant exactly what I wrote. There is no mention of antibiotics being prescribed for no reason. I am talking about a child being most likely allergic to current antibiotic hence the current medicine potentially doing more damage than good.
