Teeth removal

Hey mumsnetters, looking for some advice. My DD11 is under orthodontist care for braces. Her bottom is severely over crowded and so is her top but her fangs are also on top of the gum. She's to have 4 teeth removed in total 2 from each side. Her first 2 are coming out march 1st. She's really worried and anxious. She's never had to have any dental treatment. She's scared of needles and knows they will inject the area to numb it. I've never had any teeth removed so cannot relate. On a scale 1-10 how bad is it lol! She asked for all 4 to be removed in 1 sitting and the refused. They offered to refer her to be put to sleep but it's over 2 years wait. Anyone any experience and able to give me tips for before and after. I really appreciate it

I had 4 teeth out, two at a time, just with a local anaesthetic, when I was around 8 or 9. Not a nice thing to have done, but not awful. It was over pretty quickly, I don't remember feeling anything and no problems afterwards. The anticipation was much worse than the extraction. This was years ago, so the anaesthetic will likely be even better now.

The really good thing was I had plenty of room for my wisdom teeth, which came in very early and were perfectly straight. Most of my friends have had to have surgery to remove wisdom teeth that have come through badly. So I'm always grateful my Mom made me do it!

Hi thank you. It is local anaesthetic she will be getting which I think will probably be the worst part. It wasn't forced the orthodontist gave her the choice and she opted for it as it means she won't have any issues going forward with her mouth. I just know what she's like so dreading her first extraction appointment. IRS a Saturday so I'm grateful for that xxx

Hi i know this thread is a few months on but can I ask how your daughter went on and coped with the extractions and where she is up to with her orthodontic treatment. has she needed a palate expander etc?
My dd is older, 17 but the wait times have been horrendous. shes had a palate expander fitted, now over another 3 months wait until the actual brace is fitted. dd also needs 2 teeth removing which she is incredibly anxious about as she's also never had any dental work previously.
hope all going well for your dd.

Not a response from the OP but hoping this may help you.
My DD is 13 and had her RPE fitted when she was 12 and now has train tracks top and bottom as well. She had to have 4 adult top teeth out just before her train tracks were fitted. She had 2 done on one side then the other 2 a month later. The dentist was excellent with her, gave her plenty of numbing gel before the injection and made sure she was properly numb before starting. The procedure was quick and she healed really well with little bleeding.
Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for your reply. I actually think im more anxious than dd about the extractions as im having a bit of a wobble about her having perfectly healthy teeth removed. was hoping the expander would create enough room alone but orthodontist said it will not.
her teeth are not crooked and are actually quite nice and straight but she has very high canines that need pulling into place, apparently she needs 2 premolars removing to allow for this.
She's had the palate expander fitted and is not coping well with the discomfort of it. it'll be another 3 months before actual brace is fitted. did your did have the expander on for months before brace was fitted? how did she cope with the discomfort? how long before she got used to it?

Can I ask if she felt any pain at all while the teeth were being removed or afterwards? My DD is due for extraction next week before her braces can be fitted and is really worrying about it. That’s a good idea about the numbing gel before the injection, il ask for that if they don’t offer it. @MissRainbowBrite

LittlePineapple · 24/07/2025 22:14

My daughter has to have 2 out soon. When the numbing wears off is it painful? Soft foods? How long for?

MissRainbowBrite · 25/07/2025 08:23

DD was very nervous beforehand but as I said our dentist was very good at putting her at ease. She had her 4’s and 5’s removed to make way for her canines to come down which seems to be stuck. It’s worked a treat and both are almost fully down and ready to be included in her train tracks.
We made sure we kept on top of the painkillers on the day and for 2 days after with paracetamol and ibuprofen combined if we needed to but other than some swelling and a small amount of bleeding the pain was minimal. She said it just felt a bit bruised. She was on a soft diet for a good 5 days while the holes healed and we did a couple of saltwater rinses to help with cleaning as she didn’t brush around the holes for a few days.
Foods to recommend would be soft cereal, pasta and ice cream.
As DD only had one side at a time done then she still had a good side to eat on.
For the question about the expander she had that in for about 10 months before train tracks went on and we turned daily for 6 weeks she then had it replaced with one that holds things in place and doesn’t need turning.
She has been very lucky getting her treatment early and she is probably about 6-8 months from the end of her treatment when she turns 14. The progress looks amazing.

Am I correct that your dd has had both 4th & 5th premolars removed as in attached diagram? That seems like a huge gap will be left will it not look odd that she just has canines then molars? Are the molars pulled forward? my dd also has high canines, has just had a palate expander fitted but needs both number 4 premolars removing. im extremely anxious about her having healthy teeth removed. She's not coping well with the newly fitted palate expander and is saying its too uncomfortable so she wants it removing and no longer wants braces at all 😫.

Teeth removal
Hollyhobbi · 25/07/2025 15:35

I had 5 teeth removed for braces under local. 2 and 3 at a time. Survived it. Then I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed under ga. That was horrendous. The surgeon told me afterwards that one of them was the most impacted and hardest to pull out in all his 30 years as a surgeon! I was like a black and blue chipmunk! Had to have soft foods and drink through a straw.

MissRainbowBrite · 25/07/2025 15:46

@scottypippen sorry, my error. It was her top 4’s and bottom 5’s. She had one side done at a time.
Has your DD done turns on the RPE? Will she have painkillers? It does settle down, how long has she had it in for?

scottypippen · 25/07/2025 16:02

She only had it fitted yesterday! so has not given it chance. they've told her it will be uncomfortable for the first week or so.
she said its ruining her life and is refusing to eat until its removed. ive told her to give it a chance. she said its made her tongue sore. she does have a tendency to over dramatic. but this is horrendous and shes making me feel like a rubbish mum and like im putting her through torture.
I wish she could see the bigger picture of how nice her teeth will be. If I agree and we have it removed and forget the whole idea of braces I worry that she'll look back in the future with regret for not persevering. shes 17. shes not due to have the 2 teeth removed until October, before the final brace is fitted.

@MissRainbowBrite sorry forgot to tag you in this post

@scottypippen oh that’s really early days. Definitely soft foods and painkillers for at least a week and longer if your doing turns. It’s hard to get them to see the bigger picture but we explained to DD that she’s having thousands of pounds of work done and if she ever decided in the future to have it done she would have to pay but it’s free right now. She also spoke to some friends who’d been through it and said the same.

It’s really hard having to learn how to eat with it in and it took DD a while but now she eats almost anything. I have to admit in the early days we may have used some bribery as we could see how uncomfortable she was. It certainly helped.
