Trying to find an answer to daughters fatigue

DD is nearly 8.
About a year ago, we realised she was becoming tired more easily. This has been slow over the course of a few weeks…we put it down to Xmas, too many extra curricular activities.
GP suggested maybe a delayed response to glandular fever. We stopped things like swimming, implemented earlier bedtimes etc. She appeared to seem better during summer, we were still being cautious with not doing too much.
Started Year 3 in September, but a large issue this year has been friendships, and at some points she was quite upset and distressed about this. This was clearly impacting on her fatigue, but more from a mental health perspective.
Asked for another blood test before this Xmas, nothing of concern.
I frequently worry about her being AHDH/ ASD-attention is shocking, fidgety, has picked at her fingernails, but this weekend, she has been visibly tired again. Asked for a nap when she came home from school on Friday…this is not just sensory tiredness ( I work in a special school for context). Agreed to go to bed again over Saturday lunchtime.
GP appt again this week…what to pursue next? She looks ill. Dark shadows under her eyes, pale and skin looks shiny.
Any advice really appreciated. I’m so upset now thinking she’s so little worried we’re just going to be brushed aside by medical staff.

As another poster has said 29 ferritin is low. And can be linked to coeliac but the blood test there does not indicate that from the test.
my ferritin is 33 and feel awfully tired with it but NHS would say in normal range and but iron tablets if desire to.

i would ask to be referred to a paediatrician.

Thanks.
I will ask. We have been to stock up on vitamins/iron supplements today so I feel I’m at least doing something.

Yes that is the coeliac test and looks negative although as I say it’s not fully reliable. Would suggest take iron and vit D, ask for B12 test and get coeliac tested again in 6 months (along with full blood count/white blood count) if still fatigued.

You need high dosage iron though, ferrous fumarate, I take 630mg per DAY, you won't get that from a regular otc supplement

OP why are you ignoring me and other posters telling you that your daughter's name is still visible in your screenshot?

I’m not ignoring, I can’t figure out how to delete the picture.
Have downloaded app, won’t let me log in.

I'd ask HQ to delete, it's been up for days, really not fair on your daughter

Did your daughter test positive for Glandular Fever? My son tested positive for Epstein-Barr Virus, which causes Glandular Fever symptoms, but isn't as severe as GF. I do know that EBV and Glandular Fever can cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), which is sometimes referred to as ME (sorry can't remember what it stands for). We had my son going to bed earlier, cut down on activities (including PE at school) and he went on a reduced timetable at school, during the height of his fatigue. Our GP did tell me that we had to gradually increase his activity levels, as the less he did, the more tired he would feel. Essentially, it was a case of very gradually easing him back into full school timetable, activities at home and PE. My son is 14 and in Year 9, but he was in Year 8 during the height of his illness.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment earlier with helpful ideas.
That her name was accidentally included (I tried my best to hide) when my main concern was her health, and worrying it was something significant was really my main priority.
Mumsnet is hard to navigate, I don’t know how to contact HQ but will figure it out.

You can contact HQ by reporting your own post with the photo in it, and then describing the issue and that you want that photo deleted

Thank you.
I have googled what to do and it has been sorted.

@SeaToSki

Hi OP. Did you ever get to the bottom
of this at all? We’ve had a similar result, got appointment tomorrow but interested to hear what your experience was?

Hi
So, we’ve had every blood test possible, head MRI, met with consultant a few times.
After a huge amount of analysing patterns, looking at behaviour, it seems that maybe the fatigue and anxiety are a result of ND? It’s not guaranteed, but when I look up inattentive ADHD, she fits the profile perfectly.
The medical team are confident they have ruled everything out, and she has definitely appeared brighter and healthier in the last few months. They have been extremely helpful, and we are now speaking to one of their psychologists.
I feel silly that I didn’t realise this earlier, but excellent masking (which results in significant fatigue) combined with anxiety, may have been the cause of the exhaustion.
To look at-she looked very ill. It was little things like picking the skin on her fingers that I couldn’t really place and align with a typical ‘illness’.
So a referral to CYPS/private assessment is the avenue we are now pursuing. Neither are a ‘fix’ but we’re trying to embed support strategies as we go.
Hope you get some medical help-have you seen anyone yet?

Diabetes?

LegoInfestation · 30/08/2025 07:27

@Alexandra84 The same conclusion has been reached here with my DD. I will be interested to see how the new school term impacts her in terms of fatigue although she has still been a bit up and down during the holidays. She's been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. However it's not physical activity that leads to fatigue but mental drain from social situations, noise and being a chronic overthinker.

UKisbankrupt · 30/08/2025 15:56

Thanks @Alexandra84
They’re running lots of tests currently. It’s the high eosinophils that worry me most, but maybe I’ve googled too much. Did they get to the bottom of those at all?
