Hello, my 2 month old daughter has had bad reflux since she was about 3 weeks old. She is ebf and currently on Infant Gaviscon which is only for short term use.
The gaviscon seems to help sometimes, other times it doesn't?? The GP has told me to start using it less and less now, as they don't want her on it in the long term as it isn't a long term solution... I asked what I can do to help my daughter, and they said they will discuss it when she is no longer on the Gaviscon, because she is still (slowly) gaining weight and luckily not losing any.
Does anyone have any experience with reflux!? How can I help my little girl?
I hold her upright whilst feeding, sit her up for half an hour or longer after each feed and let gravity do its job. I've tried slowing down her feeds but she is really efficient at feeding so that's hard sometimes.
Sometimes she is sick for hours on end constantly bringing up milk without a break! The GP doesn't seem to listen to my concerns.
How did you help your reflux babies?
Thanks in advance

Hi, my son had reflux and it was a nightmare so really just posting to pass on support and to say it’ll get better!! For me it was around the 12ish week mark but I think generally when they can move a bit more - hopefully not long!! I don’t think my son had it as bad as your DD so I was just mindful to burp but generally as soon as I put him down he’d be sick. I used the sling for all daytime naps but not sure if that’s a solution!! Do you have a strong let down?

Hi @NoobieDoobie11, thank you for your message! It's really quite stressful isn't it, and really sad when they're sick so much, I feel so sorry for her😢 although it doesn't seem to bother her, luckily. I'm glad it got better for your son at 12ish weeks, the sling is a good idea, I'll give it a go tomorrow and see if it helps and if I can get things done a bit! My let down is really fast I think as she gulps the first 20ish seconds of feeding and she can drain one breast in 5-7 minutes😬 Is there a way to slow down the letdown reflex?? Thanks again for your message of support😊

My daughter is in the minority of children who don't outgrow reflux and has been on gaviscon since 6 weeks, omperazole since 8 weeks and domperidone since 8 months she's now nearly 4 and a half!

Knowledge on reflux and reflux medication is very varied across GPs and actually the GP we were seeing for my daughter's reflux from 6 to 18 weeks was giving us incorrect advice and we only started seeing improvements when we got advice from a paediatrician who corrected a number of incorrect advice the GP had given. It was hard to get Infront of a paediatrician as they kept rejecting the referrals due to her gaining weight. The referral went through for something else but they looked at her reflux too. We have since seen other GPs who have been more helpful.

I would recommend seeing a different gp

Have you had a feeding assessment or had her checked for a tongue tie? My first was very refluxy, we eventually had a TT diagnosed at nearly a year, after HV & GP said she didn’t have one (and I didn’t know enough at the time to question them).
The NICE guidelines for a breastfed baby with reflux say you need a feeding assessment, but the resources aren’t there so GPs fob you off with gaviscon instead.
I would find an IBCLC who can also do a tongue tie assessment if you can. Usually costs around £100-150.
My LO did outgrow it largely around 6-8 months.
