4 year old misshapen head

The last few weeks I’ve noticed more and more that my nearly 4 year olds head sticks out at the back on one side. Obviously I’m going into full blown panic as he’s been complaining of being tired a lot recently! But I put that down to a growth spurt.
for reference he had torticollis as a baby due to having a kiwi ventouse delivery. He had some slight bleeding they said under the skin on his head due to it. He’s always had severely strong neck muscles / rolls too along with horrendous reflux, tongue ties you name it.
With him being my first I had no clue about cranial osteopathy etc so I think he only went 1/2 times when he was around 8 months.

I never really noticed his head being misshapen as a toddler to be honest.

Will this get better? My partner thinks I’m being ridiculous for wanting to take him to a GP but with the tiredness I’m worried it’s something more.!!

picture doesn’t show it properly but it’s the top right I’m concerned about it seems coned

Sorry OP, I can’t see anything irregular with his head on that pic?

DebbieK91 · 12/01/2025 11:21

Could the tiredness be from starting back at school after Xmas ?

I think if you’re concerned get a GP appointment, focus more on the tiredness aspect than the head but definitely mention it.

GP won’t think anything poorly of you raising a concern about your child. And if it puts your mind at rest then great.

@DebbieK91 I know the picture doesn’t show it very much. I’m just wondering if anyone’s had similar at this age ?

I also think sometimes when you’ve had medical issues with DC when they’re little it definitely peaks medical anxiety within you (I had the same) so perhaps after this issue is sorted would it be helpful to talk to someone about this too?

Lockdownbaby2021 · 12/01/2025 11:23

@DebbieK91 he’s not started school yet, I actually picked up on it before Christmas. But this morning he woke up and then an hour later said he was tired and wanted to go back to bed… he didn’t but why does he keep saying it?!

Can’t see anything wrong on the picture, and everyone is tired this time of year, it’s dark and miserable and there are bugs everywhere. However if you are worried make the appointment, parental instincts do count for something and most doctors are happy to take a look at small kids.

I've got health anxiety, and this sort of thing would send me spiralling too, OP.

I don't see anything unusual in the photo, and our skulls aren't meant to be symmetrical. They're all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes.

Tiredness is probably a bit of a virus he's picked up; there's loads going around.

By all means, book a GP appointment to put your mind at ease, but I would try not to worry.

You’re his mum and you know him best. Always trust your gut, you don’t need permission from Mumsnet. Hopefully it’s nothing but if you’re concerned then best to have him checked.
