Advice MIH / hypomineralisation

Hi, I wanted to ask advice from anyone whose children have had this. My DD12 has had fluoride on her teeth for "popcorn teeth" since before lockdown.

I was concerned with both my children's teeth over that time, and started them with private hygienist appointments also, 6 monthly, plus 6 monthly NHS dentist visits.

The fluoride varnish was previously every 3 months, but hasn't been happening that regularly since lockdown. Her molars are being watched and she had some varnish treatment in September. She also previously had one small "filling" but not one that involved drilling.

She had an abscess on a molar tooth before Christmas and I got her in within a few hours. There was talk of extracting the tooth, which is an adult tooth; the dentist then decided to do a root canal, and she is going initially to have a filling there, though it is quite deep. The small "filling" had fallen out unnoticed and there had been a lot of tooth decay,

The dentist (who's not her usual one, though same surgery) checked her other teeth and said they are currently sound and do not need to be filled.

DD has in the past told me "I have brushed my teeth mum" when she had not, but she is brushing religiously now. We have the smallest size interdental brush and are using those with toothpaste. We have fluoride mouth wash.

We have progressively reduced sugar intake till she is currently having no sweets or chocolate with sugar, no juice (only milk or water), no cake with sugar, no crisps, no other sugary snacks, only occasional desserts and even then I have often made them with xylitol so limited sugar. We had homemade sugar free chocolate mousse and sugar free brownies over Xmas (they were quite nice). As far as I'm concerned, limiting sugar is likely to do all of us good.

We have lots of other nice food though, berries, deli stuff etc, thank you Aldi.

She refuses to use an electric toothbrush, I am wondering now whether this is related to hypersensitivity because of the MIH. We are using the small head Cuprinox brushes so she can get to the back.

We have the disclosure tablets, though she doesn't like using them.

I will check with the dentist whether she could usefully have the 3 monthly fluoride varnishes again.

I am wondering whether there is anything else I can possibly do.

I am wondering whether we should be supplementing the NHS work more with extra tops and if so what, or is there anything else. It is such a shame [help]

I'm interested in any responses as my 8 year old has hypomineralisation of his first permanent molars and so far the dentist is just putting the varnish on 6 monthly and I am not allowing them to have fizzy drinks, sweets or chocolate except special occasions. I'm wondering if there's more we can do to protect the teeth and welcome any advice. Wondering if I should get a 2nd dentist opinion and if that's possible on nhs?
