Child has drank fish water. Should I panic?

Just walked into my toddler sucking water out of his teddy that he had dunked into the fish tank....

Luckily I had cleaned the tank last night, I also don't add anything to it it's just a single gold fish in tap water.

However the fish has like a red circle on his head and I googled it the other day and apparently it can be due to poor water quality or bacteria effecting the fish... so I'm worried incase of the bacteria he has ingested (my three year old not the fish obviously)

Like should I be worried? 😭😭 his dad is saying ring 111?!

Honestly have no idea but thought I’d comment to help you get this message seen x

It will probably be fine as toddlers also drink swimming pool water with bacteria (chlorine doesn't get it all) and rain water etc, but if it eases your mind then call 111. More likely just keep an eye on his poos for not being diarrheal and if he gets a sore stomach etc.

Goldfish wise, they shouldn't be in untreated tap water, need at least a tapsafe product to take the harmful chemicals out for them and keep them in good shape to fight off any potential bacterial infection, and helps reduce bacteria in tank too. Does it have a lid to avoid more teddy dunking?😅

I'm more worried about the fish!
A solitary fish, and kept in tap water.

Perhaps ring 111 for advice but I can't imagine there is too much to worry about. The things my son put in his mouth 🥴.

Can I also add that your goldfish needs a little more TLC. You need to treat the tap water and have a decent filter. You can buy drops in any pet shop that make the water a friendly environment for them and have plenty of plants which is also helps the water quality. They can die so quickly otherwise.

Same - I imagine it is quite a small tank as well

DS has ingested far too much over the years this wouldn’t even appear in ny radar if it were just water and a fish

....and it needs a friend!

Pogeatsalltheburgers · 09/01/2025 11:58

Toddlers drink water out of puddles on the ground if you turn away for a second lol
He will most likely be completely fine.. at worst he might get the runs.
If he is not medically vulnerable in any way, just a healthy toddler, then his body will deal with any bacteria fine.
A fish is very tiny and may not deal with some bacteria fine.

OnyourbarksGSG · 09/01/2025 12:03

Agree I’m more worried about the fish than the toddler. Please get some tap safe, bioboost and a friend and a proper filter to fully cycle the tank. Fish can die a very miserable slow death from ammonia burns to their gills.

Adding a photo of my tank just cos I love it. Little buggers cost me a fortune in live plants but it’s enriching for them so I don’t mind.

also, you need to move the tank so your toddler can’t access it at all. Drowning is a real risk so if you can’t move it, you need a toddler proof secure lid or mesh screen

Your toddler will be fine.

My mum walked into the kitchen one day to find my brother sat in the dog's bed, sucking the floor cloth he'd found in a bucket in the utility 😂

I think the fish might need some attention though...

sometimesmovingforwards · 09/01/2025 12:05

Toddlers eat and drink all sorts they shouldn’t.

I’d just keep him topped up with fluids and keep an eye on him.

JC03745 · 09/01/2025 12:15

Keep an eye out for diarrhoea, but I too would think if he will be fine.
A friends toddler used to drink from manky puddles on the road filled with who knows what, used to lick their rubbish bin run her tongue along the floor. She is now 16 and fine!

I agree with others- put the take out of reach of your toddler!
Can we have a photo of your fishy please? 🐠

My kitten fell (aka jumped straight in head first) in the dirty aquarium water I was syphoning off during a water change and he was fine.

You DS will be fine, fish probably won't do as well. They need a big tank, water conditioners, filter etc....

Goldfish should live 20 years, most don't get the chance ..

Monstermashermashedthemonster · 09/01/2025 12:25

Toddler will be fine. Fish on the other hand I'm not sure about. You need to filter the water
