Vermox worm medication for 18 month year old?

Hi everyone,

The night before last, my 18 month son woke up and was moving around a lot in his cot, clearly uncomfortable. When I checked him, I noticed a worm around his bum. The next day, we spoke to the doctor, and they prescribed unlicensed Vermox medication for him. However, since it’s typically only recommended for children aged 2 and up, I’m feeling concerned. The doctor did mention some uncommon side effects, which has made me even more cautious.

We all plan to deworm as a family, but I’m particularly concerned about how the medication might affect him at his age. Has anyone else been in a similar situation or used Vermox for a child under 2? Also, if anyone has tried any natural remedies that have worked, I’d love to hear about them.

It's fine. I gave a dose of Ovex (same stuff) to my 20 month old. When the worms came back I went to GP and checked if it was the right thing to do. He said it's fine from 6 months and prescribed us some Vermox.

The 2 years and over is pretty much a general blanket recommendation for most children's medications

The BNF for children which is the primary source for information for all healthcare professionals gives a dose for threadworm infections of:
By mouth
Child 6 months–17 years
100 mg for 1 dose, if reinfection occurs, second dose may be needed after 2 weeks.

Following oral administration, < 10% of the dose reaches the systemic circulation. The majority of an orally administered dose remains in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore very unlikely to have any adverse effects.
