My now 19 month old has had this mystery rash since 10 months old and nothing to date has worked.

It started as these strange blisters that just appeared but overnight multiplied and became very inflamed. Called the doctor and they had no clue what it could be and prescribed fucidin cream. It cleared the blisters but then a dry red rash took its place. We were told to keep using the cream but the rash kept spreading.

Another trip to the doctor we were told its just a drool rash and to use vaseline which suprise suprise didn't work, same doctor then said to only bath every other day to not irritate or dry out the skin and use aveeno cream. The rash just spread and someday was very inflamed looking.

Another doctor thought it could be a bacteria infection out of control and prescribed the hydrocortisone fucidin cream which seemed to help for a few days before it came back worse than before. This is when we hit the 6 month mark of this and we were getting frustrated.

Another doctor prescribed oral antibiotics thinking the steroid in the cream was possibly feeding and encouraging growth of whatever it is and this seemed to work! It wasn't fully cleared but was assured the rest might go away itself, it didn't so a second course was prescribed and for the first time his face was finally cleared completely. Unfortunately this only lasted a few weeks so we were sent for a skin swab. When I was finally given the results I was just told everything came back normal and they hung up before I could question further about what to do next.

It's spreading again and now in the mornings is very dry and then inflamed in the evenings. He's had no fever or in any discomfort at all and hasn't spread it to his little sister who he shares everything with so it's not contagious. I'm at my wits end with this so was just hoping someone has seen it before as all I can think of now is requesting another skin swab and to be referred to dermatology.

Ouch
No clue what it is but you need them to refer you to dermatology.

rainbowstardrops · 01/01/2025 10:33

Oh your poor little one. I really have no idea, sorry, but I'd be pestering for a referral now because it's been going on for so long and they haven't got to the bottom of it.
Your nails are gorgeous btw!

It looks exactly like the perioral dermatitis I had. I went through all sorts of creams and face washes until one particular doctor clocked it and prescribed antibiotics.

My dd had perioral dermatitis which was caused by her spacer.
I wonder with your DS if there is more than one thing going on, so he had dermatitis which broke the skin and then has then led to a fungal or bacterial infection, or possibly both.If the antibiotic worked then that suggests bacterial, but he needs to take it for much longer.
They gave my DD steroid cream which worked but then the rash would come back much worse when we stopped the cream.
In the end it was antibiotics plus religious use of moisturiser which got rid of it.

My daughter had something that looked like this. Turns out she had a skin allergy to cooked tomatoes, tomato paste or anything that had cooked/processed tomatoes in the ingredients, eg baked beans. She was fine with raw tomatoes.

Have you looked up water warts? Iodine scrub got rid of them when DD had them.

Just thought I'd post an update incase anyone else has anything similar. Still no idea on what the original blister looking rash was but the latest theory is all the creams and treatment so far have done more harm so his natural bacteria is now in overdrive. Only think we can do now is give him antibiotics when it flares up for the next few years until it naturally settles as he grows up.

We were also told we wouldn't get seen by dermatology because he's already responded to antibiotics but if/when it next flares up I can request that a doctor from a different practice who is a skin specialist come see him. So until then lots of moisturiser and more medicine for atleast a year or 2.

Not exactly that type of rash but I lived with rashes and what can only be described as “cradle cap” through out my life and when I finally got an allergy test turned out that I am allergic to all the creams and Vaseline that doctors recommended as well as all shampoos body washes and cleaning sprays

Yalta · 17/01/2025 13:38

Does look like an allergic reaction
