High temp

My daughter has had tonsillitis, started last Saturday (high temp sore throat but at the time tonsils looked a little swollen and red but not like tonsillitis).
Took her to the walk in centre on Sunday as her throat looked awful.
Definitely tonsillitis and was given a 5 day course of penicillin.
Seemed to be getting better, throat almost back to normal temp down since Monday night.
Now her temp has gone right back up again, I've looked at her throat and that seems a bit swollen but nothing like it was.
Just a bit concerned.

How high is her temp? Is she feeling unwell in herself?
She could have caught something new but it's probably worth getting her checked. If she's over 5 a pharmacist can now check, swab for strep A and prescribe!

Sorry timeline wrong, Friday it started,Saturday walkin centre and has not had a temp since Sunday night.
(Can't get the days right since they have broken up from school)
Until now that it has come back to over 39!

Problem with a pharmacy no where is open until Thursday now.

Has she been taking the antibiotics? And how far through the course is she? Five days isn’t always enough, but if she’s not finished I’d just keep an eye for now and maybe consider an ooh GP tomorrow if she’s unwell. She could have another illness on top of the tonsillitis

Doors247 · 31/12/2024 19:19

Last day of antibiotics is tomorrow, we have given them religiously and she has hardly eaten.

Really sorry but in my experience tonsillitis takes 10 days of ABs to clear it up (my experience is as an advanced nurse in a walk in centre)

Doors247 · 31/12/2024 19:49

We were only given 5 days, and only ever given 5 days of antibiotics when she has had it before.

4 x 5ml of 250mg of penicillin.

I wouldn't be so concerned, it's just because her temp had gone for almost 2 days and now has spiked again to over 39.

My DC has just had a second five day course as the first five day course didn’t clear tonsillitis. He’s generally always had 10 day courses before.

Doors247 · 31/12/2024 19:59

I've looked at her throat and it looks nearly back to normal.
Problem is being in a packed walk in centre she could of picked up something else.

I'll keep an eye on her and if it continues or and her throat does get bad again ill get her seen, just worried as she hasn't eaten really since Friday.

Thank you all.

My daughter used to get tonsillitis frequently and often would need 10 days of antibiotics. Occasionally 2 courses. I'm sorry it's horrible.

Doors247 · 31/12/2024 20:06

I've just looked up on the NHS guidelines and it says Five days may be enough for symptomatic cure; but a 10-day course may increase the chance of microbiological cure.

So what is the point of 5 days? And why only give 5 days worth of antibiotics?

Is it 39 before or after pain relief? Has it gone down since given some?

watersoul · 31/12/2024 20:08

I don't know but when that happened to us second doctor told us 5 days was wrong.

BadgeronaMoped · 31/12/2024 20:08

I work in a walk-in centre, new year's eve/day are usually not so packed. Ours has a live webpage with the number of people waiting and the wait time (in case you go tomorrow). Hope she's feeling better soon.

Doors247 · 31/12/2024 20:43

Her temp has come down with ibuprofen, sat there eating onion rings at the mo.

There should be a pharmacy open tomorrow. Could be the next town over etc, but there will be one. Whether or not they can help I'm not sure. I think I would be tempted to call 111 tomorrow and actually speak to a dr who may well prescribe over the phone as
you already have the diagnosis.

You are very likely to fully resolve the tonsillitis with a 5 day course, with 10 days you are suppressing the strep that may be colonising the throat even when well, which reduces the amount of transmission in the population.

So if you don't manage to complete the 10 day course parents don't have to feel bad about it and can feel confident the infection has resolved anyway.

You could argue in the UK where recurrent/invasive strep infection is uncommon anyway that the 10 day course thing is a bit of a remnant of older practice anyway (unlike in say NZ where there is lots among Maori and Pacific families especially).
