Hypospadias Repair

My little boy has a hypospadias repair planned in next week. His is a mild case and he's down as a day job. We won't know the level of repair until he's in there but I was just wondering if anyone has been through similar and has any advice on recovery.

both of my boys have hypospadias.

my firstborn had a mild case, his was day surgery.
he had a circumcision and then the little wee hole stretched so came out with a bandage and stent that dripped into his nappy. (We had to double nappy him, your urology team should explain how I know it differs from hospital to hospital)
in regards to aftercare with him it was a case of trying to keep him relatively calm for the week he had the catheter in and to keep him dosed up on calpol/ibu and the bladder spasm meds - he also had antibiotics for a week.
after removal of catheter it was a case of keeping him calm (very hard with a two year old) and then not letting him go on ride on toys for a month. Was all very straightforward and easy!

my second boy had moderate hypo with chordee, his operation was a bit more intense and an overnight hospital stay but recovery was pretty much the same! Although he was given a big dose of antibiotics in surgery so didn’t need to give him them orally- I think this is the new way of doing it.
he’s just had a fistula revision yesterday which was day surgery and he has no bandages/catheter- just stitches and glue.
for this we have to keep him chilled out, and have an antibiotic ointment to put on his stitches!

sending lots of love for the upcoming op x

Hi. My little one is 2.5 years old and has acute hyperspadias and chordee meaning he needs to have 3 ops in total. This was identified very late after a long wait to see the right people, so he's older than most boys who will have the repair surgery. We were very shocked about this having been advised by multiple medical professionals that it would be straightforward/1 op. He's had the first op and I'm taking time to comment here for anyone who like I did, ends up late night anxiety searching for any and all help about what to expect/how much to worry. We're only 1/3 of the way in, but the first pre op and post op was nowhere near as bad as my husband and I anticipated. I know every case and child is different. Our boy was easily distracted so the general anaesthetic was administered very smoothly. Maybe it'll be different next time as he'll be more aware, but I'm grateful for at least the one pass we had! He was very sore after the op and didn't enjoy nappy changes because of this but singing to him seemed to help and being extra quick and reassuring. Lots of treats during recovery and lots of love. We had to keep on top of giving him Calpol for a few days, but he was chatting and running around like his normal self a few hours after coming round post op. We couldn't believe it! The double nappy system that was described to manage the catheter was fine once we knew what we were dealing with. Worth noting we have deliberately held off potty him so as not to confuse him given he needs to be in nappies for at least a week after every op. Like I say, all kids and cases will be different, but just trying to give some hope to people that it might not be as bad as you are anticipating for your child or for you. We can only hope that everything will be fine for him in his adult life, we're informed by the surgeon that it should be.

Hey i just wondered if theres any update on how your sons surgery went?

Cherrysw3et · 01/11/2025 07:04

Hi, we've actually only recently seen the surgeon so he can see how things look and discuss the next surgery. Everything looks as expected apparently after op 1 and his next op date is in the New Year. In between time we've potty trained, still on that journey. I didn't want to wait not knowing how long it would be (or how old he'd be) when all ops were finally done. Training has gone fine, there's probably a bit more spraying than normal re #1s but it stays in the potty and will not be an issue hopefully after op 3.
