Would you call 111 for a sleepy baby?

First time mum and huge questioner of my own judgment and ability…

2 month old baby has been very sleepy for the last 18 hours or so, barely awake in that time and although has had a couple of bottles (combi fed) has fallen asleep after a couple of mins of breast feeding.

She doesn’t seem to have a temperature so would I be excessive calling 111?

No, any doubt always call. You know your baby. Hope all's ok x

toastedcrumpetsrock · 29/12/2024 17:45

I would call too

FanofLeaves · 29/12/2024 17:46

For a baby that little, yes I would call, you certainly won’t be wasting anyone’s time.

SeaToSki · 29/12/2024 17:47

At 2 months, yes you should call. Thats still very little. Has she had some wet or dirty nappies? Apart from the sleepiness, I would also be concerned about dehydration. Also, If you watch her breathing, does she seem to be labored, is her chest sucking in when she breathes in at all?

Iwishiwasagiraffe · 29/12/2024 17:48

I would also call with a baby that little. You can never be too careful

Haroldwilson · 29/12/2024 18:00

Err on the side of caution. They'll probably also ask you to check her for rashes.

Haroldwilson · 29/12/2024 18:02

And one thing I've learned from motherhood - trust your judgment. A few times I've debated with DH whether kids merited medical help - I have ALWAYS been right.

Your judgment as a mother picks up on tiny cues that you can't put your finger on but trust it, it's a superpower.

Doctors always told me they'd rather see hundreds of tiny babies needlessly than miss one who needed help.

Happierthaneverr · 29/12/2024 18:03

At that age I would call.

Sayshesheshe · 29/12/2024 18:05

Thanks everyone, I’ve called and waiting for a call back from a doctor.

She’s being doing wet and dry nappies still. Managed to get another bottle into her but she’s gone straight back to sleep which is not like her at all.

The worst that happens if you call is you might waste a few hours at a clinic /OOH

Has anyone else in the family been unwell in the last two weeks?
What is the situation with wet and dirty nappies?
If you give her a bath and sing some songs does she perk up?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 29/12/2024 18:05

Absolutely. Then chances are that your baby is absolutely fine but going off their feeds is one of the biggest markers of a baby becoming unwell and will often come before any other signs so you should always get them checked. A Dr would always rather see a well baby than risk not seeing a poorly baby.

curlycurlymoo · 29/12/2024 18:08

Always call. Every doctor I've ever seen and it's been for
Nothing they've always said that it's the right thing to check. Hope your baby is ok.

mrsmacmc · 29/12/2024 18:10

Glad you have called and hopefully not too long a wait for callback. Don't let them fob you off with if LO has had plenty wet nappies today all is OK, if you feel something isn't right then go with your mum senses ✨

nocoolnamesleft · 29/12/2024 20:52

Needs a face to face review, at that age.

Sayshesheshe · 29/12/2024 21:05

111 sent us to A&E, all his stats are normal but waiting to be seen by a doctor, I’m glad I called for peace of mind if nothing else!

thanks all!

Good call! Mother's instincts are valuable especially at such age. How's the baby doing?
All the best!

SeaToSki · 31/12/2024 15:33

How are you and baby doing OP?

minnieot · 31/12/2024 15:37

I did when my baby had the same at 6 months old and we were admitted onto the ward and had to track feeds and nappy outputs and they tested for infection just to be sure x

wishIwasonholiday10 · 01/01/2025 08:03

You were right to seek help, always better safe than sorry with a tiny baby.

When my DD was that age we had a day like that when she was very sleepy and hard to rouse even for feeding. Since the GP was open they were able to look at her and didn’t think there was anything wrong. She was back to normal next day and we never worked out why she had been so sleepy as she didn’t seem ill. Hope it turns out to be nothing serious for you too!

mrsed1987 · 01/01/2025 09:29

Better to be safe than sorry but both my children had random days like that when they were small, hopefully he is just having one of those days! X

Sayshesheshe · 01/01/2025 12:42

They were incredibly thorough, some infection markers came back in the bloods but not enough to alarm so we were discharged and told to come back if anything changes but it’s been ok since.

I’m glad we went and definitely didn’t feel like time wasters.
