8 year old sudden fever and very achey

8 year old bit clingy yesterday and spent morning saying her back hurt. She then started shivering and has a fever of 39. If
comes down to 38 on calpol / Nurofen. She’s miserable saying everything aches especially her legs so badly and is trying and failing to get
comfy on couch. She has a cough and I’ve tested for covid which is negative. Of course it’s xmas eve 🤦‍♀️is this likely flu/ virus to just ride out at home
or possible chest
infection Which might need antibiotics? She’s still drinking / passing urine but
she is miserable. Only options now are 111 who tend to take 18 hours + to respond with a call back here or
a&e which it doesn’t feel serious enough for. On my
own so hoping for some sane handholds and advice as I’m pointlessly panicking 🤦‍♀️

My ds (10) had this a few weeks ago. Fever o my responded to ibuprofen, calpol/tylenol did f-all. His turned into pneumonia but dd2 only had a high fever for 4 days and then was fine. Missed about a week of school in total, whereas DS missed 2 weeks.

How is she @dancinginthedark123? Really hoping she’s feeling better

dancinginthedark123 · 25/12/2024 11:37

You’re so kind to ask. Rotten night- basically no sleep as she was so hot. Temp comes down to 38.5 on calpol / nurofen but she’s still so achey and tired. Not eating anything but drinking. She also has a very chesty cough now so wondering if it’s a chest infection which is the one illness we’ve not had yet🤦‍♀️how do you know if it’s flu or chest infection and
if an out of hours appt is warranted? Hate being a single Parent at these times.

Please take your child to a doctor.
A complication of flu is viral pneumonia.

@dancinginthedark123 oh bless her heart. I would (if not already done) speak with 111 and ask for an OOH dr appointment. Does she seem any better at all this morning? If not, 111 or consider A&E if her condition has worsened x

@dancinginthedark123 hope she's better this morning and you got some sleep.
how do you know if it’s flu or chest infection and if an out of hours appt is warranted?
You go to medical school - let the docs make the decision. Ring GP and if you don't get an OOH appointment today call 111.
