Getting rid of cradle cap!

RLGO36 · 18/12/2024 19:50

My daughter is 22 months and I cannot seem to get rid of her cradle cap. I have tried a shampoo which did help, but it just reappears as soon as I stop using it.
Does anyone have any special shampoos that have worked for them? Or any home remedies?
Thank you!

Very many years ago: we used a mix of baking powder and olive oil massaged in then shampooed off. Worked a treat. Good job too, because I wouldn’t have been able to resist a good pick!

Lots and lots of coconut oil directly on scalp with a lots of scalp massage with a soft baby brush

Extra virgin olive oil. Its used for the same reason in hospitals

I use an Australian sulfate free brand called moo goo. I bought it for her sensitive skin but it’s helping keep her cradle cap at bay too. It’s such a pain my 3 year old still has so much baby hair because it couldn’t grow through properly with the cradle cap

Oil and comb.
Depending on how bad it is they might lose hair.
But it's not painful. Only thing to get rid of it.

We used coconut oil but it never really dealt with it. When she was 4 we felt confident enough to use Nizoral shampoo, given by the chemist. We used it twice a week for a few weeks, then once a week, and now once a fortnight to keep it at bay. I’m not sure if I would use it on a very young child, but it was getting to a point where she was losing hair and I was worried about kids being mean. It’s been 3 months and seems to be keeping it at bay.

Cradle cap shampoo from Asda is great

I shaved DDs head and used almond oil. The oil didnt really help at all until i shaved her hair off. She looked like a half plucked chicken anyways, because strands of hair fell out with the cradle cap all the time. He hair grew back really nicely and evenly.
My family gave me a hard time though, because she looked really funny bald.

When my DD was a toddler, someone recommended a nit comb. It's easy to get it off and out of the hair with it. Obviously be gentle, but it's SO satisfying! 😁

Apricot kernel oil and a fine tooth nit comb. Lifts away from the scalp. Very satisfying!

Olive oil gently massaged in to to the scalp works wonders - good luck

Both of mine have suffered badly with cradle cap - my eldest I was still having to dentinox him until he was about 6!

My youngest is 2 and still gets it intermittently, for a few nights in a row we wash with dentinox, rub it in the area really well then use a specially bought toothbrush to loosen the flakes and comb them out.

ETA around 18 months ago I couldn’t get hold of Dentinox for love nor money and neither baby oil or olive oil did anything apart from making his head very shiny.

I suddenly had the thought of doing this to my 8 month old a few weeks ago, used it twice and his has all gone!

We used olive oil when he was little then used Nizoral at about 4 - that finally got rid of it but it is very strong so possibly not suitable for little ones. He still has a flaky scalp so we brush his hair a lot as this helps to flake it off.
