Effects of 12 week rotavirus vaccine - is this normal?

DS had his 12 week jabs five days ago and he is still very distressed indeed from the rotavirus vaccine. Think runny, explosive poos, LOTS of gastric pain, and posseting more than normal and more curdled than normal. He’s tensing his legs as the milk goes through him while crying and screaming.

He has never cried so much or been so distressed as over the past few days. He is inconsolable and even going on the boob doesn’t help.

When will it wear off please?

My poor DC1 had this reaction to it. It lasted 3 days. It was horrendous. I really feel for you and your DC right now.
Edited to add, after 5 days it might be worth seeing a GP or ringing the HV if you can tomorrow.

Thank you, it’s good to know it’s not unusual (though not good to hear your DC also struggled). I’ve been so surprised because after the eight week one, he had a day of runny poos the day after and that was it. I didn’t imagine for a second he would have this response to it Sad

Yes we were shocked when it happened as well, as we weren't told of any possible issues. I really hope he feels better soon. It's such a horrible reaction and I remember so much liquid coming out of both ends and how upset DS was. He wasn't right in and of himself for over a week but the acute phase only lasted 3 days.

I'd be worried about dehydration at this point with it being day 5, so if it's still going, definitely follow it up; it's occurred to me that 111 might be a good shout on a Sunday?

There can be gut side effects to RSV vaccine and worth ringing 111 and getting your baby checked by a HCP:

https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/rotavirus-vaccine/

Copied from above link advice sheet:
Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 if your baby:
keeps being sick
has blood in their poo, or their poo looks like redcurrant jelly
has a swollen or painful tummy
stops feeding
has signs of dehydration – such as fewer wet nappies
is under 3 months old and has a temperature of 38C or higher (or you think they have a high temperature)
is 3 to 6 months old and has a temperature of 39C or higher (or you think they have a high temperature)
has diarrhoea for more than 7 days
These could be signs of an infection or a blocked bowel.
If you're worried about your baby, it's best to trust your instincts and contact your GP surgery or call 111 for advice.

Thanks all. We’re not worried about dehydration as he’s feeding as normal and his nappies are wet and he is pooing. He isn’t warm to the touch.

I’d say the main symptoms we’re worried about is the increased posseting and the vastly increased distress after feeding, when the milk is being digested and going through his system.

It’s such a shame. He is normally such a happy cheerful little boy and for the past five days he’s been so upset throughout the day. I can’t believe the symptoms haven’t passed through him yet.

My ds4 had this. He is 11 now so the rotavirus vaccine was fairly new then and none of my older dc had had it so I didn't know what to expect. I remember his poo was like acid and even though I changed his nappy straight away, he still had awful nappy rash. Hope your little one gets better soon.
