DD 4 MRI result- Lesion in the left mastoid air cell and mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinuses

Hello,

I have just received the below result from my DD MRI via letter. ‘Lesion in the left mastoid air cell and mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinuses’

No explanation apart from referred to ENT for expert opinion due to history of head banging. (I think because my daughter has been to A&E with a bad bump to the head before?) but they never scanned and send us away after monitoring.

Since googling I am really worried. Both seem like they could be serious ? Especially the lesion the the bone!? She had an ear infection that hospitalised her once but no lump behind the ear at the time? It looks like it can cause damage to the bone if not treated properly. Could this have damaged it and how do they repair this?

I have emailed paediatrician’s secretary to ask if they can call me as receiving this has worried me ….

thanks in advance

Conclusion: Mucosal swelling in paranasal sinuses and in mastoid cells is a frequent incidental finding in children. Even major mucosal swelling in a paranasal sinus is not necessarily a sign of infection. In radiological reports the terms "sinusitis" and "mastoiditis" should therefore be used with great caution. The initiation of treatment should be based on clinical symptoms and not on radiological abnormalities alone.

So - could be related to sinusitis/mastoiditis or could be an 'incidental finding' (unexpected but not necessarily worrying) but it's suggests it's more about looking at the child than the MRI.

Your ENT will talk to you about it - do you have a follow up appointment?

I would also see an ENT who specialises in Cholesteatoma just to rule that out.

OP what was the outcome? I have just been told similar about DS, 5, after a CT scan
