11 year old chest (heart?) pain - panicking

He said today while sat at school, he felt a squeezing/throbbing pain in his chest which lasted a few seconds. He pointed to slightly to the left of the middle of his chest. What he describes the pain he holds up his fist and squeezes it. He hadn’t been running around or anything like that.

He’s got it again this evening on and off. He is well otherwise, no coughs/colds. Not stressed/worried about anything. It’s not severe or painful enough to make him cry.

I am a huge worrier about things like this and am trying to stop myself dashing him up to urgent care. Does anyone have any clues as to what it could be?

Take him to out of hrs to at least get his vitals checked, better safe than sorry. Also could it be the onset of a panic attack, is worried about anything?

MissMoneyFairy · 04/12/2024 20:53

You could ring 111 and ask their advice, let him rest at thr moment.

Curlywurly1975 · 04/12/2024 21:01

Thank you. No he’s perfectly calm, not worried about anything.

Heartburn? Have you any Rennies, Gaviacon etc you could give? Check the dose for his age obv. If that doesn’t sort it out almost immediately I’d be thinking he needs to be seen. Maybe get on hold to 111 now.

mammaS11 · 04/12/2024 21:04

Definitely get it checked but just to reassure you my son had the same and it was inflamed cartilage between the rib cage

Puddlelane123 · 04/12/2024 21:21

Precordial catch syndrome? I got it alot at that age and found it really frightening.

Fireworknight · 04/12/2024 21:29

I would get it checked out. And woukd consider an and e if it happens again.

GildedRage · 04/12/2024 21:36

my youngest got pericarditis at that age certainly worth a check.
when in doubt you must rule it out, all chest pain no matter how minor needs to be assessed.

Eaglemom · 04/12/2024 22:15

I am a nurse and strongly advise you to take him to A and E to get checked out. You can't take any chances with chest pain no matter the age. If you call 111 that's what they will tell you to do so just go without delay. You won't regret coming away reassured if it's nothing serious, and it is what A and E is for. I hope all turns out fine.

Curlywurly1975 · 04/12/2024 23:08

on hold to 111

How is your son OP?

Curlywurly1975 · 05/12/2024 19:52

He’s been fine, thank you. Still getting the pain now and then but it’s very mild and he’s absolutely fine otherwise. 111 assessed him and made him a GP apptmnt for tomorrow afternoon.

DS sometimes complains of chest pain and I'm not sure if it's trapped wind. I'd be interested to hear how you get on at the doctors op. Good luck

Curlywurly1975 · 08/12/2024 21:46

GP did a full check up. Asked if he’d had wind or reflux (which he hasn’t) so I guess wind could be a likely cause in your case - or was worried about anything (no). He wasn’t really sure what it was but said if it gets worse or doesn’t go away, next step is an ECG. Also said if it comes on during physical activity to stop straight away and get seen.
So I’m afraid I’ve no real answers for you @BooseysMom
