Hi, my 7yo has had a constant heavy cold since the mid-end of September. I took him to the GP at the end of October as his cough got quite bad and he said it was viral and his chest was clear. He then got chickenpox a couple of weeks later, which has now cleared, but his cough getting worse. But is it normal for children to have a constant runny nose, feeling tired etc with no break? It just doesn't seem to be shifting. Thanks

I'd start wondering about hayfever. If it goes on for long enough it makes you feel rubbish and tired. If I spend time in a room with geraniums it makes me feel like I have a very bad cold. Mucusy, swollen sinuses, tired and eventually a cough caused by post nasal drip. If you have any indoor plants I'd eye them with suspicion!

Hi, no indoor plants but il take a look into hayfever, thanks

You could give a dose of cetirizine antihistamine just to rule it out.

It could be another allergy other than hayfever. Dustmites and pets are also common allergens for perennial rhinitis.

Another vote for potential allergies. I take antihistamine all year round because of hayfever in spring/summer months but then increased dust allergies autumn/winter. Heating is on, which kicks up all the dust and windows aren't open as much.

Theres a long running thread on here about someone with sinusitis where it wont clear. Ive had sinusitis for going on 8 weeks now, various anti biotics etc. Still ill

I will look into the allergy side and check for dust in his room, really helpful thanks

I’d be wondering about allergies and asthma. DS2 had a runny nose and cough last autumn/winter which we thought was constant viruses at first. Turns out he’d developed another allergy (already allergic to dogs) and he’s now allergic to dust mites and asthmatic.

He's now had two weeks of antihistamine and a nasal spray but still no change unfortunately. I will have to take him back to the GP after Christmas.
