What is this? Tonsillitis but can’t be!

DD7 had tonsils out last year. She’s been complaining of feeling achey, very low grade temp, generally a bit off. Small cough, nothing major. But said today her throat is very sore and when I looked it’s pretty red with a white spot on side it’s sore and where her tonsil would been. She’s now shivering under a heated blanket so temp clearly going up- can’t be tonsillitis as
she doesn’t have tonsils 🤯

Strep A? I had this last week. The white spots got much worse, very quickly. I felt like I had flu. I went to the pharmacy, who did a swab and confirmed it was strep A. They prescribed 10 days of antibiotics there and then. Check online if you have local pharmacies that offer the same. Or ring 111.

Quinsy?

Katherineryan1986 · 30/11/2024 17:03

My daughter had her tonsils out but continued to get 'tonsillitis'. They just called it a throat infection 🤷‍♀️

dancinginthedark123 · 30/11/2024 17:04

Could it be strep if she doesn’t have tonsils?
shes pretty miserable, sore tummy /
head/ achey back and legs etc

dancinginthedark123 · 30/11/2024 17:21

Strep, DS3 had it a few weeks back and I caught it despite having no tonsils.
Although the removal of tonsils reduces the chance and severity of infection you are still susceptible to the bacteria. It doesn't seem fair IMO!

This happened to me when I was younger. Years later I had bloods done when pregnant and it turned up I have had glandular fever which probably explained the exhaustion/ antibiotic resistant never ending throat infections.

I had a test at the time and it was a negative but apparently testing isnt terribly reliable.

Strep throat needs antibiotics asap so I'd see an OOH doctor tomorrow if you think it's that.

MerryChristmasYaFilthyAnimals · 30/11/2024 22:33

I had my tonsils out as a child. A bout of tonsillitis a couple of years back has me bed bound for a week. Apparently I have remnants of tonsils and it can still get infected.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 30/11/2024 22:35

I had my tonsils lit when I was little. Then when i was about 40 I lost my voice and had a terribly sore throat. Apparently yes, you can still get tonsillitis if they've been taken out.

Hohofortherobbers · 30/11/2024 22:43

The white lump looks like a tonsil stone , even though she has no tonsils. You can probably roll it out with a cotton bud. Post the pic on sporners corner for the expert opinion though. They'll love the . Hope she's better soon.

sorry - 2
possibly stupid questions coming up

  1. what is a sporners corner?!
  2. Never heard of a tonsil stone- assuming it’s not strep / needs antibiotics if you can remove it yourself? Tho given she’s barely willing to even open her mouth to let me see as says it’s so sore. I think it’s unlikely she’ll let me poke around with a cotton bud ☹️

Sporners corner is a chat topic on here, very knowledgeable folk on all things wound/infection related.
Tonsil stones are a build up of gunk in previously scarred tonsil tissue. The sporners on here love them and can advise on removal.

chocciebiscuits · 30/11/2024 23:03

My daughter gets these all the time too, looks like a throat stone op. They come out with a bit of pressing of a cotton bud and stink to high heaven when they're released!

HoundsOfSmell · 30/11/2024 23:05

Tonsil stones

dancinginthedark123 · 30/11/2024 23:10

how have I never heard of these?! After 20+ strep A /
scarlet fever infections in her 7 years i thought
i knew everything about tonsils!!

OP posts:
dancinginthedark123 · 30/11/2024 23:11

Sounds like they wouldn’t be causing her sore
throat/ temp/sore tummy
tho?

After I had my tonsils out as an adult I continued to have similar symptoms. I was told it was "phantom tonsillitis".
It did tail off after a few years.

Superscientist · 01/12/2024 09:41

Another one who's had tonsillitis with no tonsils. Its an infection where the tonsils were. I have only had it twice in the 20 years since having them removed but one oof those times I ended up in a and E because I could barely swallow saliva.

It's probably worth a phone call to 111.

jackstini · 01/12/2024 09:43

See if you can get to a pharmacy today that does 'pharmacy first'
They will be able to diagnose and then prescribe 5 days of antibiotics if required

dancinginthedark123 · 01/12/2024 12:59

Update:
got out of hours appt today and dr confirmed it’s tonsillitis. She said If I hadn’t told her she’d had a tonsillectomy last year she Wouldn’t have known as she has “small” tonsils that have grown back which is unusual in 12
months. aaarggg!
10 days of penicillin….
thanks to you all for suggesting I get her checked 🤍
