4 year old concussion

This morning my child's dad was carrying our four year old down the stairs when he slipped 2/3 stairs up, and four year old fell backwards and hit his head on the hard floor.

999 was called as he was completely inconsolable, head was hurting a huge amount and starting talking nonsense.

He was taken into a&e and monitored where he was sick 3 times. Extremely sleepy and drowsy, but no confusion etc.

Sent home. We've just got home and he's been sick again (he was given anti sickness at the hospital about 3 hours ago)

How long is this sickness likely to last? He's asleep again now, and isn't waking up as such to be sick. Just sick when he's awake.

I'm obviously still worried about him, and have never dealt with concussion prior so any advice would be helpful. Thank you

Glad you pushed for a scan but you shouldnt of had to
This could of been so easily missed
The NHS is truly broken

How is he this morning?

exhaustedpigeon101 · 23/11/2024 19:39

Sorry it's been a busy day between the hospital and also looking after my daughter.

This morning he was still being sick and seemed quite poorly still but this afternoon he's perked up! He's getting tired very quickly and is napping a lot but that's to be expected as his brain recovers and whilst he's trying to talk and concentrate at the same time

We're waiting for a care plan from kings for going forward I.e what he can and can't do for the next few weeks, school advice and future scans etc but they're really pleased with him and hopeful that he can come home tomorrow.

All his neuro checks have been good and he's in good spirits too. I'm so happy he's getting better and hope that tomorrow he can be snuggled in bed with me 🤍

This thread has made me a bit teary. Your poor boy. I'm so glad you pushed for the scan!

I hope he recovers quickly.

Gosh, how scary for your DS, OP. Hope he's feeling better soon. Which is your local hospital? Scary that they could have missed it but excellent that King's are on his case.

Just to warn you that you will probably also get a call from a specialist HV team. DD1 is 3yo and fell down a few steps coming down our stairs (when I was 36w pregnant 😫) and bumped her head on the laminate floor. We took her to A&E as a precaution but she had no concussion or vomiting or anything. Later that week I got a call from this specialist HV asking how it happened. She was very nice and chatted about what we could do to prevent anything like that happening again in the future and asked a few questions about family life. Apparently all head injuries seen in hospital in London are referred to this team. I assume its a safeguarding thing but I never heard anything more about it.

Yes I meant to mention this in my reply yesterday but forgot. I'm in a different country but also got a safeguarding call from our local nurse a few days after the concussion hospital visit I was a bit mortified but I think it's standard practice for head injuries in children. As pp said she was perfectly pleasant just asked if all was going OK for us in our household. Glad your boy is OK hope he gets home tomorrow.

Hi Op I just wanted to say my much older ds had a similar accident and it takes a long time before they are truly fully fit. At 4 I would really go very very slowly with returning to busy normal days. School can wait.

exhaustedpigeon101 · 23/11/2024 20:13

@FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee oh bless you, he's okay that's the main thing! I'm glad we trusted our instincts.

Yes I was aware that it would likely happen

One of the doctors today basically interrogated DP today about the incident, then asked him to leave the room whilst he questioned our little boy. I had warned him that it was likely to come before it happened because it's quite a serious injury of course.

The doctors have said that they have no safeguarding concerns and that there's no need for SS to be involved now. But I'll let him know about the potential HV call.

@CrispAppleStrudels oh god bless you that must have been scary for you and your daughter! Glad you're all okay. Our local hospital is Tunbridge Wells hospital. They have always been amazing so I'm surprised that they dropped the ball on this one. But they've been so good since so I can't complain really

If it's taught me anything it's definitely to count our lucky stars and to trust your gut. I'm glad I did because it could have been very different and it really doesn't bear thinking about

So pleased to hear he’s doing better, I bet you’re counting down the hours until he’s back home!

exhaustedpigeon101 · 24/11/2024 15:34

He's home! 🤍

He'll have a check up in 6 weeks, and there's no physical activity for at least 2, but he's cleared to go back to school etc

I'm so happy that he's feeling better
