I feel sick to my stomach

I'm hoping I'm putting two and two together and getting five.

My beautiful 3 year old boy had a bruise appear under his big toe nail a few months ago and I didn't think much of it as he's always crashing into things etc. it looks like it's starting move down the nail now it's growing out.

Last week he was sent home from nursery complaining of a headache and had fallen asleep. The sleepiness went on for a few days and has stopped (thankfully I think this was a virus)

The last few days he's had a few random nosebleeds. His sibling also gets them sometimes when the weather changes. Also with the cold weather he's got dry skin around his lips / chin.

Tonight he's saying his neck hurts. He's glands are really swollen but he generally seems ok in himself.

I've made the mistake of googling and it says these are all signs of bloody cancer. I'm ILL

I have a docs appointment on Friday for his toenail - I think I need to get an urgent one tomorrow. I'm so so so scared.

If you're worried, then definitely get him checked out. But they also sound very much like the symptoms of being 3. Covered in bruises because they never stop, and constantly sick because of bloody nursery germs. Some kids are prone to nosebleeds.

I really hope this is correct. I wish I didn't google! The only reason I did was because of the swollen neck glands. That amongst the other stuff has freaked me out

Swollen glands are normal with an infection, my mum would always feel ours. Everything you described could be put down to a virus, apart from the bruise, which is down to being 3.

healthybychristmas · 19/11/2024 20:49

I think the bruising with cancer would be very different to in the toenail! Try not to worry but see a doctor for reassurance.

poordeets · 19/11/2024 20:52

When I really think about it, he had nosebleeds on an off back in approx spring time too. So I wonder if it is season changes for him for that

Your three year old won't have cancer. Everything you've described is typical for it being cold season and having a stubbed toe.

Do you have high anxiety generally?

SeaToSki · 19/11/2024 20:55

Has he had bruises on parts of his body that are unlikely to be bumped as a 3 yr old (so you cant count the toe nail). Cancer style bruises are not the same a bump bruises.

I think he is just 3

Could be hay fever/allergy related if it started in spring. I understand why you're feeling freaked out, but cancer pops up a lot of the timd if you put a list of general symptoms into Google. Bruise under nail that doesn't go away usually means it was a sudden impact, something dropped on the foot for example and a clot burst and it needs to grow out. Is the toe red at all on the toe itself not under the nail? If the bruise has gone into the nail bed it can get infected. There's no harm in seeing your GP so I'd do that.

poordeets · 19/11/2024 21:01

No, no other bruises that I've noticed.

It's just a load of things seem to have happened all at once and I'm hoping it's all a virus, plus a bruised toe (which has been there a few months). The nosebleeds add to it. But like I say, this isn't new and happened earlier in the year too.

Am I being crazy? Blush

Yes. I called the gp yesterday who looked at images of his toe and asked me to come in later this week. But I'm now wondering if I should push for an appointment tomorrow instead of waiting until Friday!

My son and my husband both get nosebleeds when the weather changes.

Lubilu02 · 19/11/2024 21:32

Mine have had back to back viruses lately.
One had a cough and temp, had a nap during the day for 11 days straight then, just as they'd got better, picked up a mild sickness bug the same week.
I also feel like I've had mild nausea 1 week, cold the next, back to nausea again and cough, which I've found quite unusual.
Seasonal bugs having a mind of their own this year I'd say 🙂
No harm getting the once over by a doctor if you are worried x

poordeets · 19/11/2024 21:35

I'll see what his glands are like in the morning then I think I'll make a call to wait until Friday or try to get seen earlier. He seems totally fine in himself otherwise!

It's good he's getting checked out, op. But this sounds very much like anxiety? (I also add everything up and my brain equals cancer). My son was having recurrent ear infections, was pale, tired, complaining he couldn't walk because his feet were sore and I was convinced he had cancer. It was just him exhausted from ear infections because his adenoids were huge, causing these ear infections and very interrupted sleep. I got myself so worked up about it all. Try not worry. Everything you've described could be a coincidence, bruises and infections all normal for this age. It's always best to get checked but try and not allow your brain to run away with the worst diagnosis

Franjipanl8r · 19/11/2024 22:05

Sometimes nosebleeds can happen when the heating is ramped up for winter and indoor air becomes dryer and nasal passages become dryer. A bruised toenail isn’t a sign of blood cancer!

poordeets · 19/11/2024 22:17

Thank you for the reassurance everyone Blush

Gizmosgremlins · 19/11/2024 22:35

My DS gets nosebleeds at this time of year...probably due to the dry air spending more time indoors and the heating on. And my nephew had leukemia years ago and those bruises were not ones you could ignore. Worth getting your DS checked out for reassurance but to me it doesn't sound like anything at all to worry about.

icanatilldancetowhigfield · 19/11/2024 22:35

I hope you feel reassured. It is very natural to worry once you notice things and start adding them up. I agree they all sound very explainable. All the best OP.

Noseybookworm · 19/11/2024 22:43

Honestly lovely, please try not to worry. It's very likely that he's just picked up a viral infection which has caused swollen glands and nosebleed. The bruise is probably unrelated. See how he is tomorrow and you can always ring for an earlier GP appointment if you're still worried. It's very very unlikely to be anything serious and he would seem much more unwell if it was.

poordeets · 20/11/2024 10:52

GP thinks this is just a lot of bad luck all at once.

Toe, which was my main concern is not even remotely a concern to her.

Nosebleeds she thinks is seasonal.

Swollen lymph nodes she thinks is him fighting off a viral infection but as they are so large he has to go back in two weeks just to make sure no new symptoms have turned up.

OP posts:
Autumnweddingguest · 20/11/2024 10:56

But OP, you have noticed. You have made connections you couldn't possibly have made until he presented with this full constellation of symptoms. And as soon as you added them together, you made an appointment. You are a caring parent.

It is unlikely to be cancer. It is more likely to be the usual run of toddler viruses and bumps and his own individual quirks of health. But if it is, then you spotted it and you are getting him the medical attention he needs.

Don't waste energy on guilt. Pour it into staying calm and resilient until you have all the facts.

I crossed posts with you. That is all good to know. But did she offer him blood tests, to be on the safe side?

poordeets · 20/11/2024 11:13

No. She didn't offer blood tests, just told me to come back in 2 weeks but call them again if any new symptoms surface
