Teenage son migraines

My 15 year old son has been diagnosed with having migraines. The last/first one lasted 6 weeks. Unknown trigger. He had a CT scan and blood tests but nothing showed up so the conclusion was a migraine. That was a few months ago. He's now having another. No medication seems to touch it. The headache or the nausea/sick.

I wasn't really aware that this happened to teenage boys. Any recommendations for something to try to alleviate the symptoms?

I think stress and lack of sleep could be a trigger.

NICE recommend acupuncture. It worked miracles on my friend who has had migraines for years.

My DS was similar, prescribed meds & didn't want to take them. Eyes tested & no issues there.
Hadn't linked it but he did grind his teeth occasionally & was waiting for orthodontic treatment to start. Literally the 1st day he started wearing blocks to correct his jaw position the grinding stopped & he's not had a headache since. So definitely something to consider

Migraines are awful. Poor thing.

Sumatriptan is the biggest help for mine. Taking tablets with fizzy drinks helps the tablets work too. When mine is at its worst though I'm taking sumatriptan, ibuprofen and anadin extra (paracetamol and aspirin) to get through it.

Other than that I get some relief from hot showers and heat packs on my head and neck.

My son takes no medication at all, he says nothing works so doesn't want to take anything. We've tried Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and cocodamol, plus the migraleave pills. The anti sickness pill domperidone did nothing either. He's currently wearing a cold compress hat that we found on Amazon, I think the pressure and coolness brings some relief

I have chronic migraine. These are the things I use. It’s important to know that these attacks are not singular incidents. It’s a neurological disorder. He shouldn’t take more than 10 lots of medication per month or he’ll end up in a medication overuse cycle.

I take b12, magnesium, q10 every day without fail.

Cyclizine is a good anti sickness medicine that you can have prescribed. I find wearing a cold cap every time a start any kind of symptoms is very helpful.

I really feel for your son and for you. It’s a horrible condition to have. The National Migraine Centre will do consultations for a donation. They are also very helpful with information and advice.

Definitely get an eye test- while I think it's unlikely to cause migraines (especially if he's waking with them), it can also show signs of pressure behind the eyes which may need investigating.

Have you tried electrolytes? I find an odd combination of electrolyte drinks, full fat coke, plenty of water and sumatriptan help.

I also got masseter Botox which made a world of difference but didn't help my hormonal migraines (but PP suggestion of the dentist sounds good)

Has he tried cold and flu pills, and a can of very cold Coke

Danielp87 · 27/11/2024 22:00

Sumatriptan has worked for me greatly

@chiey
How is your son doing with his migraine?
I hope he has managed to find some relief.
