I am convinced my daughter has sleep apnea but i have been fobbed off by gps anytime I mention it. She snores every night, mouth breathes, wakes frequently meaning she is exhausted when she wakes and throughout the day. She has issues with her ears also so might need grommets. Could anyone tell me do her tonsils look swollen in this pic?? I think yes but not sure....

They do look pretty big. I’m going through the same with my DC. Huge,
almost touching tonsils, ear troubles and potential sleep apnea. We’ve had a sleep study done and apparently it was relatively normal, but i’m not convinced. Have you had a referral to ent? We are still waiting.

@Earyweary oh really sorry to hear you're going through the same, do you find it affects your dcs behaviour? DD is just so tired all day everyday its horrible and tough for everyone. we haven't had a sleep study done at all, hasn't been offered to us but we have been referred to ent!

Yes they do. I went through this with my dd and it took from 18months to 4.5 years to get her tonsils out. I was treated like a paranoid mother. A nurse I met through work told me to say that when breathing at night she sounded like a train. I had spoken about her sleep and how bad the snoring was etc but for whatever reason that specific wording worked. She got a sleep study done and due to her breathing cutting out 20 odd times through. The night she was taken in very soon after for adenoid/tonsil removal and grommets. Keep taking photos, video the snoring at night. I found that phoning the gp every single time she had an issue helped get them on board for chasing up the hospital.

Excuse the snotty face but this is a photo of her tonsils during a ‘normal’ time which are swollen like in your picture. The other is a photo of them during a bout of tonsillitis.

Same here, planning to start trying to get a referral, I've been told she has enlarged tonsils anyway, I've got videos of her when she's asleep, and she's never slept well, has been a mouth breather since she was a baby. Hope you manage to get referred, my DD is currently just over 2 years old.

Keep pushing with the GP.

I had my son's tonsils and adenoids removed in May and had incredible support on here

I now have a completely different child.

I was lucky he was on my private health with work but getting a referral was still so tough. The difference in him is incredible from a sleep , health and growing point of view .

My son woke up a lot and snored like a train. Turns out he also couldn't smell and barely taste which we have only realised since removal and watching him experience things.

He's now having undisturbed sleep and does not snore and he's just so much healthier .

Push for a sleep study and good luck

Our DS had tonsils like that and had to have a tonsillotomy. Apparently no child should snore - he was and it was making him slow at school; his teacher picked it up and we said he snored, so perhaps he was tired.

He also had grommets after suffering from glue ear but the tonsillotomy came later. We went privately for it though - not sure how long it would take for an NHS op. He never really got tonsillitis much, but they almost touched naturally at the back of his throat, without infection.

@fearfulworrier Yes it's been so frustrating trying to get them to take me seriously despite the fact that I have been there so many times and mentioned it for nearly 2 years now! The gp actually told me her tonsils looked normal.
I've taken a video of her sleeping as it's actually concerning watching her sleep, it almost looks like her tongue is blocking her throat. Poor thing must not get any good sleep at all.

@Just1234 that's what I am hoping for so that's great to hear that it had such a positive impact. Part of me was worried thinking is surgery the right thing to do but with the way things are its affecting every part of her life really

Hi OP I know how you feel. I've had tonsils like this since I was a kid and even to this day. I sleep and breath through my mouth at night and it's not so much a snore but a heavy breath and then I choke and wake up. My daughter is also the same. Both told we had big adenoids. Nothings ever been done. My current partner said it's the weirdest thing he's ever heard with me lol! He shits himself when I start the choking. Xxxx
