Amoxicillin for throat infection?

advice please… x

My 4 year old has been coughing non stop. This morning broke out in a fever so my partner took her to a walk in centre. They noticed white on her tonsils and prescribed amoxicillin 3 times a day.

They look much worse tonight and fever is in 39’s.

My only concern is every time she’s had throat infections in the past it’s usually penicillin that’s given? Should I contact my GP tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment to query?

Looking on the NHS page it says it’s usually used for chest and ears (no mention of throat)

Thanks

Amoxicillin is a close relative of penicillin though. My kids have only ever had that one, for any antibiotic needs.

No, you shouldn't query the medical professional, they know better than the internet

Obviously if she doesn't improve contact the doc, but the antibiotics take a couple of doses to kick in. I usually expect an improvement after two doses and a good nights sleep

No that would be really weird. Why not give the antibiotics, and if she doesn't show any sign of getting better then contact your GP.

@BookGoblin ok thanks that’s good to hear.

I am only asking as I she has always had penecillin having suffered with throat infections in the past. And it’s the NHS page I saw amoxicillin was usually used for ear and chest not throat so it worried me ..

Amoxicillin is a penicillin, and it’s widely used for bacterial ear, nose and throat infections. Just treat your DD and seek furthe advice if she is getting worse, or doesn’t start to improve within 48 hours.

They prefer to give the red penicillin medicine for throats. I've forgotten the name, but it's a really bitter tasting syrup. My dd could not tolerate it at all and we've always ended up with amoxicillin as an alternative and it's always worked.

@alittleworried83 thank you I’m hoping this is the case for us as she’s always had penicillin too! I think she’s now developing strawberry tongue and she has a red spotty rash on the roof of her mouth- she’s had this twice before (strep) and was always treated with penicillin so I’m hoping this amoxicillin works !

Amoxicillin is standard penicillin plus a bit of extra coverage, so you're definitely getting equivalent treatment for any relevant bacteria.

alittleworried83 · 11/11/2024 06:45

The penicillin is more targeted, I would have a low tolerance for going back if you don't see an improvement. I find after 3 or 4 doses there is usually some improvement. If not I'd book in with your GP in case they need the more targeted antibiotic.

@alittleworried83 thank you. I feel we may have too. She seems to be in much more pain today with her temperature climbing higher than it was yesterday - but her throat visably looks much better with less ‘white’ streaks. It’s confusing. Her temperature hit 40 earlier then within half an hour dropped down to 38. It’s all over the place.

She’s also refusing food more today than yesterday and even refused an ice lolly earlier. Looking at it it doesn’t look as bad as yesterday but she’s complained of the pain so much today so I’m unsure what to do to be honest @alittleworried83

Great sign that it looks better. The temperature in itself is not a bad thing. It's the body fighting the infection. Hopefully tomorrow she'll be feeling much better and her appetite will come back. I don't think any doctor minds seeing a child again though, so if you're worried then make an appointment. It's so horrible when they're unwell
