Bruise on 13 month olds stomach

Feelhelpless93673 · 09/11/2024 19:46

My 13 month old has a small bruise on her stomach, towards the side.
She is a climber! And climbs everything. The only think I can think of is when she pulls the smallest nest table out, she slid off it the other day climbing and possibly scraped her side. The bruise looks more of a line than a round bruise.
After a google I am absolutely beside myself. It says stomach bruises are either abuse (absolutely not) or the worst case scenario.
is it really abnormal for a toddler to get a small bruise on their abdomen? I am so worried :(

One of mine, infant school age has come home from school on at least 12 occasions with cuts, grazes and bruises to his stomach area. He’s fallen over a few times at home and grazed his stomach as well as the usual knees, elbows and hands. How he manages to graze/bruise his stomach is beyond me but he does. You might have a similar model.

What's the worst case scenario if it's not abuse?

Look, who's going to see it? No one has done anything wrong. They'll get a lot of bumps and bruises along the way. If she's a climber continue letting her climb!

Toddlers get bruises absolutely everywhere! Why are you beside yourself?? It's a bruise. It's fine. Not ever worth googling.

I'm sure you have nothing to worry about....it sounds very minor but as someone who had significant post natal anxiety til my baby was a toddler I do get it.I had CBT to help get past some of my anxiety, as I was constantly second guessing my decisions, panicking about the what ifs and beating myself up about the smallest incident.I also had intrusive thoughts. It does get easier as they get older. We are now protective rather than paranoid!

It's non mobile infants where bruises are the signs of abuse op, a 13 month old is always on the move !!

It depends on the bruise....but certainly not something for OP to worry about judging by the cause and size of bruise she describes

You have a bruise and you have a reason for the bruise ...this is a non-issue try and stop worrying. Mobile children get bruises all over particularly those that aren't too steady on their feet yet.

Leave it for a few days and if it goes then it's a bruise.

Thank you everyone, I suffer with complex ptsd as the result of medical negligence with my son as a baby. For the most part, my health anxiety is under control, some things like this trigger it. I really appreciate everyone’s responses. The old me would have rushed her to a&e (seriously, no bashing please) but the new me posted here instead. I still have a way to go with my anxiety but I am having therapy.

My husband reminded me that when he was blowing raspberries on her tummy the other day, my son joined in and ended up nipping her tummy (he is pre diagnosis for autism and has a speech disorder, biting is his language) and it’s exactly where the small bruise is.

Thanks everyone and sorry if I sound like a crazy mum 😭

Well there you go @Feelhelpless93673 that's progress, well done 🙂

Well done, sounds like you have managed to reassure yourself. Just to add to the other comments, I have 3 DCs and they were always covered in bruises once they started moving around. The pulling up stage is definitely a bumpy one!

Well done for managing your anxiety. It must be so hard and you sound like you are making good progress after the very scary experience you had when DD was tiny. Glad you have found an explanation for the bruise and nave been able to step back and not go with your gut reaction to take her to A&E.

Thank you ❤️ the terrible experience was actually with my son who is now 4, such a long time ago but completely changed my life and who I am as a person. I’ve been in therapy for almost 4 years but I still have to battle through every anxiety provoking experience. When I saw the bruise on her stomach I almost fainted, which probably sounds silly to some. But I had actual flashbacks, thinking something awful must be happening to her. The difference now is, I can work through it ❤️

Thank you. She is newly walking too. Today I was actually filming her and her brother playing and she fell from standing into the play kitchen and she now has a corker of a bum bruise! I’m glad I got it on video so I knew where it was from 🙈

You sound like you’ve made amazing progress on a hard situation @Feelhelpless93673 and I’m glad you’re feeling more reassured now. 🌷

My one year old has a small bruise on his tummy at the minute as well (to match the others on his shins and the one on his forehead), it didn’t even occur to me that it would be a cause for concern. He walks into walls, corners, trips up and falls onto toys all day long. I wouldn’t worry
