Hi Parents,

Just concerned as my nephew hasn't passed a stool in 7 days now. Doesn't seem in pain or gassed up but his parents are conscious it's been so long. EBF and health visitor said to call them tomorrow as will have been 8 days.
Any advice, as I've forgotten all the tricks and tips from having my son!
I know they are doing the stomach rubs etc but think they are worried more than anything.
Thanks for any help or suggestions

Baby's mum needs to discuss with her midwife again ASAP because a baby who is EBF that hasn't passed a poo for a few days is a sign that milk might not be going in properly (maybe tongue tie, or other latch issue) so needs reviewing.

Once babies are over 6 weeks old we can worry a bit less about not passing poo every day, but under 6 weeks babies need to be doing 2 x poos per day, each at least the size of a £2 coin

Well done for supporting her- you sound like a lovely Auntie!

Thanks for your time to reply and lovely comments. I've sent it across to them - told them to join Mumsnet too as always so helpful.

He is actually booked in for a tongue tie procedure on 7th Nov so maybe that will make a difference too.

Just hope even a rabbit size poop pops out tonight!

I've said to keep an eye on temperature as any waste inside a body can cause infection etc.
I'm guessing that's all we can do for now - wait for the HV update tomorrow 🤞🏼

If she would like some free advice from someone trained in breastfeeding support, she could call the National Breastfeeding Helpline (open day and night). They can talk her through some ways to double- check that milk is going in OK. Website here: www.nationalbreastfeedinghelpline.org.uk/

This was a sign of CMPA in my baby. Worth considering once other problems e.g. tongue tie have been ruled out x

As well as the tummy rubs, you can cycle their legs. A combination of the two used to get a poo from DD... but she was at least 4 weeks old before we started doing that every 6th or 7th day. It's good that he is going to be checked tomorrow

A warm bath, baby over the knee and back massage, and if mum would consider it- a ready made bottle of formula- they have a higher glucose content and tend to give babies loose stool. Is baby passing wind at all? - good sign, no wind is a bad sign and could indicate bowel blockage x

Just had the poop update....

It's a small one but it's happened 🥳

Thanks everyone I'm going to share your comments with them.

And hopefully the stools continue to pass!

I was told opposite with my feeding team and midwife. That ebf babies are use up almost everything that they take in so sometimes not alot comes out. My ds record was 10 days all came out normal in the end

My baby boy is nearly 3 weeks old now and hasn't had a 'proper' poo in over two weeks. I say 'proper' because Last Thursday there was a little bit in his nappy, more of a stain, and a bit around his bum too but not a big one at all.

He is exclusively breastfed and is gaining weight (above his birthweight now) He is passing wind, weeing a lot, and we have tried everything from bicycle legs and warm baths to tummy massages but nothing is working

Midwife / paediatricians have checked him and are happy that he is doing all the things above and that nothing seems to be of concern. I keep being told that it will probably happen in a few days but how long do I leave it before it starts to be a problem?

Baby sometimes strains like he needs a poo and get a bit upset but then is fine a few moments later - probably just trapped wind?

Has anyone experienced anything like this and can offer some advice?

Severely anxious first time mum here!!

Breast milk is the perfect food for human babies so there is very little waste. My three were all ebf and would go up to ten days maybe more. When they did go it would be head to toe clothes change. The poo would be mustard like colour and consistency. I attended La Leche League meetings back then (in another country) and my friendship group were all bf mums. For someone who is breastfeeding I would say ask another breastfeeding mum not someone who has never done it. I have never bottle fed and wouldn't have much of a clue about it!
As long as a bf baby is having 6-8 wet nappies a day and putting on weight then they are grand.
