Repeated high temperatures in 8 month old, should I worry?

I'll start off by saying I do have quite severe health anxiety around my son after he developed meningitis at 4 weeks old. The only symptom he had was a temperature. My 8 month old started nursery at the beginning of September but I will set the scene of play over the last 5 weeks or so:

Week 1- end of sep, temperature for a day or 2 and sickness bug for 5 days

Week 2 - temperature for 2 days and then tested positive for covid

Week 3- temperature for 2 says and then hand, foot and mouth

Week 4- stinking cold, temperature for 1 day

Tonight- temperature again, still seems to have his cough and cold slightly.

I have an older daughter so I am aware of them getting bugs when starting nursery but I'm now starting to really panic that the constant temperatures he's having and the fact he's bouncing from one infection to another could be a sign of something more sinister (eg leukaemia) . He generally seems so miserable at the moment although we've also just changed his milk to Neocate as he is CMPA.

Can anyone either talk me down or offer advice as to whether I should push the doctors for some blood testing to rule the above things out? I'm currently sat awake googling all sorts and getting myself into a right state 🥺

I wouldn't worry but do talk to your HV/GP if in doubt.

The temperature is explained by each illness he has had

When a baby starts Nursery we always told parents to start them afew months before they return to work, as its highly likely the baby will be at home more than nursery

But if you are worried, then ofcourse talk to your doctor

@GiveMeAbitOfSugar thanks so much for replying- they do all seem to have a cause and today he has woken up full of a snotty nose again but I think what worries me is is it a sign of something underlying if he is getting something new every week?

Hi @miniworry Im sorry your little one is poorly. My 11 month old DD started nursery at the end of August and it has been pretty much the same here. She’s not been well since, first it was a sickness bug after 2 days in nursery, then a cold, conjunctivitis, then hand foot and mouth and now another cold. She has also had bronchiolitis several times and has required hospitalisation for oxygen. Most of these illnesses resulted in a fever. I think it’s just the norm when they first start nursery. I doubt it is anything sinister but if you’re worried I’m sure your GP will happily see little one and check them over.

@Fleur240 thank you so much for sharing your experience and I'm so sorry your little one is going through the same! However that does make me feel slightly better- we've got an appointment with the gp in half an hour although I'm sure hey will just tell me it's common when starting nursery- it just feels constant!

What did the GP say?

miniworry · 29/10/2024 14:39

@GiveMeAbitOfSugar he said that he thinks it's just a case of a weak immune system and him catching one bug after the other. He didn't seem overall concerned at all; said he will speak to paeds to see whether they want to see him but he doubts it.
