CMPA or lactose intolerance?
Hi 👋🏻 everyone,
My 5 week old has been on aptimil lactose free since she was 1 week old, HV recommended we give that a go However she is still having the same symptoms. Which are the following
Arching her back constantly when burping and pushing back her head.
Sometimes it sounds like she has a blocked nose throughout the day even though she doesn’t have a cold.
Face is covered in red patches and tiny little spots.
farts a lot especially after having an feed.
She grunts and squirms practically all night doesn’t ever really Settle even when asleep.
Screams sometimes when having a feed on the bottle & half way through.
She has a bowel movement every 2 days but it’s always a green colour.
Generally just a fussy unhappy little baby
And cries a lot😢

Mentioned it to the GP and said they can prescribe Nutramigen hypoallergenic milk if we want to try:?
she has told me she might have an milk intolerance so I'm unsure if it's CMPA or lactose intolerance has I've seen both of them for each of these symptoms he got.

Thankyou for the really long post, I appreciate any advice.❤️

Small babies can't really be lactose intolerant so it seems odd they advised you in this way. Cow's Milk Protein Allergy is possible, there aren't really any tests and the symptoms aren't specific so often just have to try a hypoallergenic milk and see if it has results (taking 2-4 weeks).

Agree. Primary lactose intolerance in neonates is rare as hens' teeth buried in rocking horse manure, but CMPI/A is pretty common. The only test for it is trying a hydrolysed (or sometimes amino acid based) formula and see if symptoms resolve.
