Covid Fever

DS (6) has had a fever on and off since Monday, full of a cold and also now developed a cough (dry rather than chesty) so I'm assuming Covid Sad

When do I need to worry about the fever? He's never really ill and in the past the only times he's had a fever it's gone after a few hours. It's been 39 at its highest, but now seems to be hovering round 38-38.5 when it's high but does drop back down to 36/37 when he's not burning up. Apart from the cough and lack of appetite (he is still eating but just grazing and 1 Main meal rather than 3 meals a day but drinking lots of water) he seems well enough in himself. Currently kicking a football round his toy room quite happily.

I've been giving calpol and nurofen to reduce fever as needed, and it does drop a little. But just concerned how long this has been going on for now, I do suffer with health anxiety when it comes to DS too so sometimes I'm not sure if I'm worrying too much

You don't need to worry unless it goes very high (I'd say over 39) or he seems very unwell in himself. That he is playing and eating a bit are good signs.
Having a bit of a fever over several days is perfectly normal when a child is fighting a virus. It may come and go.

Keep him well hydrated and let him rest when he needs to.

Well firstly (I mean this kindly, honest) you can’t assume it’s Covid, any number of viruses will produce those symptoms. I don’t worry about a temperature so much, I worry about other symptoms that might show with it and how they are in themselves, are they still drinking, passing urine etc. You don’t need to give medicine to reduce a fever, it’s more that having a fever makes you feel a bit shit so treat that rather than the number. The number on the thermometer doesn’t necessarily indicate how ill you are.

Thank you both, I needed some reassurance I think. Realised in my first post I didn't mention the fact we are currently away from home so that makes my anxiety even worse!

And yes @Atishooo you're totally right, I'm just so not used to him being ill, especially the persistent high temp I just jumped to Covid being the reason. Could be that, or like you say many other virus that present similar symptoms.

Hes eaten well tonight and in the main been his usual boisterous self (despite running a temp between 37.7 & 38.3) so hopefully this is the start of him being on the mend Smile
