11 month old not crawling

Just looking for peoples experiences with their little ones who were “late” crawling. My son is 11 months next week and not crawling, can’t sit up from lying down, can’t really roll either - back to front is ok but not the other way. He sat independently young, and LOVES holding your hands whilst walking - that’s killing my back and knees but that’s a different issue 😂
We didn’t do much tummy time with him when he was younger as he was a very sick baby and it always ended with him throwing up. In the last few weeks he’s started going onto all fours when on his front and rocking but then flops back onto his belly. How can I help him further? He’s getting frustrated at being just sat & if I do walk with him holding his hands the minute I stop he gets upset.

I’d keep up with the tummy time -as much as possible. Can you put toys around him that are just out of reach to encourage him to move forward/ roll?

Notthebeard · 23/10/2024 12:10

It sounds like he nearly there! My son did the rocking thing on all fours for about a week before figuring it out. I did helping him by moving his knees forward, then hands forward etc.

And great that he likes walking holding your hands. Will he stand holding onto something? My daughter’s favourite game at the moment is pulling all the books off the bookshelf. Makes a huge mess but good for increasing strength and awareness of balance 😂

Also my two hated tummy time and couldn’t care less about rolling. My son did it once and then never again! Both much more motivated by walking. Children are all so different

My DC didn’t work out crawling until about 14 months so I wouldn’t worry, just keep encouraging him.

MammaKel · 23/10/2024 12:15

My one year old couldn't do anything, she couldn't sit, crawl etc and we were really worried.

After she turned one she started doing it all within a month and then started walking, she 2 this month and absolutely fine so try not to worry x

BloodyAdultDC · 23/10/2024 12:18

Neither of my DC crawled at all. Bum shuffles then late walking.

They both had massive heads and hated tummy time.

I was worried about mine being late, he could sit ok but that was all and at his one year review he was ‘in the black’ (not as positive as when taking about your bank account) - I took him to a private paediatric physio and she did a very helpful and reassuring assessment and helped me with exercises to help him. He did catch up and walked by 16 months! Took a further 18 months for the NHS to see him despite his significant delays. Good luck op.

My son seemed nowhere near crawling a week before he was 11 months. He couldn't pull up to stand or roll really either. We paid for a physio to come and just check if he seemed to be on the right track. On the day he turned 11 months, the physio came over and he crawled, pulled up to stand and started rolling all within that week!

He walked at 14 months. He is always a bit later than average with milestones (pointing at 18 months for example) but I think some kids learn by watching and then one day they wake up and just do it. I understand your stress though - it's hard watching other kids wizz about when you don't know the future. But it really is possible for them to just wake up one morning and just do things!

My youngest was nearly 13m before crawling. Just sat there, didn’t start reaching for things and getting into tummy / hands and knees until a couple of weeks before. Started to get frustrated at that stage but I don’t recall doing much to help other than tummy time.

Overthebow · 23/10/2024 12:49

Crawling isn’t a milestone in itself and some babies don’t ever crawl and go straight to walking. Sounds like he’s in his way though if he’s going up on all fours. Can he pull himself up to stand? That’s an actual milestone for this age.

Moier · 23/10/2024 12:50

My daughter never crawled.
She just started walking at 9 months
Every baby is different.

user2848502016 · 23/10/2024 13:30

It's fine, if he can walk holding on and sit unaided you don't need to worry.
It might be that he won't crawl, just bum shuffle and walk.
You can keep up with the tummy time and putting toys just out of reach or playing with pull along toys, but nothing to get to stressed about!
My eldest rolled everywhere from 5 months then crawled at 7 months, my youngest didn't really move until she suddenly started crawling at 9 months- life was way easier with the youngest!

mrsed1987 · 23/10/2024 13:44

My son was 11.5 months crawling and 15 months walking. He is a very active 5 year old now, don't worry too much and just keep encouraging...it will come

Ehc1989 · 23/10/2024 16:18

Thanks you everyone for your replies - it’s really comforting to read.
@Overthebow if he’s sat down and I give him my hands he’ll pull himself up, but he’s not learnt yet to do it against the sofa or walker say.
@Notthebeard yes he can stand for blooming ages leaning up against the sofa, and in general just prefers to be upright than lying on his front so maybe crawling will just never happen!

Sorry to jump on this but my 11 month old is in the same position and I'm going crazy with worry. Any advice? Thank you

I don't really have any advice I'm sorry but I understand how stressful it is!

Literally a week or so after she turned one, she started sitting then she'd army crawl and then she started crawling and at about 22 months old she started walking.

She was referred to physio so I'd suggest speaking to your HV and GP about it and hopefully they can help.

The hand holding when your super tall is a nightmare ( I really struggled with my back)
I got reins I know people hate them but it really made such a difference back ache sorted , also allowed bit more balance and independence early
