So DS has been poorly for over a week now. Started with a cough and progressively got worse. Took to the doctors who advised to go a&e due to flagging with sepsis signs. Seen in a&e - baby has scarlet fever and tonsillitis, sent home with antibiotics and told to go back if not handling fluids. He is struggling to drink as it hurts to swallow. Struggling to keep his temp down and wet nappies has reduced massively. Went back to a&e as advised, 4hrs later, sent home with the advice of “just keep trying”. On day 3 of “just keep trying” and nothing seems to be improving.

Is it worth another trip to a&e? Skeptical about going drs again as they missed this twice before sending us to hospital.

I would definitely go back to a&e there is a very real risk of dehydration

How old is he? What's his form like? Is he lethargic?

Are you giving paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly? Are you giving warm cordial, as it goes down easier, and ice lollies?

Other tricks for getting fluids in can include - giving paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly (even if no fever) as these are painkillers which will help with the sore throat. If old enough to eat you could try Watermelon, jelly and ice lollies all have a very high water content and viewed as treats (now is not the time to worry about sugar).

Hi all, sorry for the late reply! Got sent home with “just keep trying again”. He’s 10 months old. He’s managing jelly so if it’s a jelly diet for the next couple of days, I’m happy with that! He’s now having wet nappies and has had 4 today!

Alternating calpol and ibuprofen she he’s always got something to help with his temp. Hopefully the antibiotics kick in soon.

thanks for your advice!!
