8 year old unwell and we are on holiday and I’m on my own- handhold please

Away in a caravan in rain, single mum- handhold please due to awful health anxiety.

DD8 has had (I think) a shared virus with me for about a week- nothing serious but I’ve felt pretty sick, headachey and tired. She’s been more sneezy and just a bit more clingy / off food. Nothing that bad. Thought we were over it and came away to a caravan with her 12 year old cousin I have this week and she was just so off today -she looked so pale in local cafe the lovely waitress came and gave her a free hot choc to “get her blood sugar up” which she didn’t drink, and she’s complained of sore legs and back most of today. This evening low temp of 38 and says throat is itchy and sore and she feels a bit sick. Looking back she was very restless last night and kept waking with bad dreams. She also has a slight rash that blanches that I assumed is viral.

hate being on my own away from home when she’s ill☹️don’t want to cancel this much looked forward to holiday away but I’m nervous, have castle/beach trips plans but she just wanted to stay on couch today and she’s in bed now on calpol. Do you think it’s most likely to just be same or other virus? I have my niece all week as her mum is working away and the girls have been looking forward to this so much. My health anxiety makes me want to pack up and run home and have her checked over but my rational brain says she’s not that poorly, I’ve not felt well this last week so likely same thing and if we just keep going with quieter days than planned and calpol she will hopefully get better while here? (We leave on Friday).

thank you all in advance from a worried mum in a caravan feeling a bit lonely ☹️

Hey that sounds rough in terms of being a mum alone with little ones and health anxiety - I know what that is like. But really on the balance of what you’ve said it sounds like a common and garden virus which she’ll be better from very soon.

TheHorneSection · 15/10/2024 21:36

It does sound like a rubbish situation but try and remember, most illnesses are just passing illnesses. If she respond to Calpol it is probably a passing bug, plan a lazy day to help her recover. I’m not a professional but there’s nothing you said that would have me overly worried about her.

Whobestinmotherland · 15/10/2024 21:40

Thank you so much, I think i just feel a bit isolated and everyone else here seems to have a lovely partner and I could really do with another adult to tell me it’s most likely just a little virus and that does cause achey legs and back and a temp /rash and it’s fine we have a couple of caravan based days even if her cousin is bored stiff and we missed our Alnwick castle visit 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️thank you for much needed handhold X

It is pants when they get ill when your away - I can remember spending 3 hours trying to track down an inhaler in the Peak District! But hopefully one nice chilled day and she’ll be feeling much better x

Whobestinmotherland · 15/10/2024 23:02

Oh that sounds stressful! Hope you managed it!
she’s sleeping now but fitfully and sleep talking so guessing she’s still fevered, the lovely remote caravan is not relaxing tonight!

Sorry and from my health anxiety worm- is backache normal in a young child? Not had that one before and goolge NOT helpful on this 🤦‍♀️

Sounds COVID-y to me which if so she’s hopefully over the worst. Try and encourage her to drink lucozade sport etc to keep fluids up and blood sugars.

Whobestinmotherland · 15/10/2024 23:06

Thanks- her cousin loves lucozade so came with a pack so can dig one out for her in the morning.

Put them in the car dose up and go home. She won't resf until she is in her own bed. Sometimes you just have to accept the holiday is over and no one will enjoy... just go home for her sake

I’m so tempted too but will be hard as I live in a tiny 2 bed flat and so her cousin would either have to room in with me or her and I think would be horrified by both ideas as we both have a small single in our rooms 🤦‍♀️just rubbish timing as has planned so many nice activities for this week with her mum away and she’d kindly given me money to book castles / trips out and the Caravan. ugh.

You can get her seen locally by calling 111. We had to go to the walk in when we were on holiday a few years ago they were very helpful and some meds given to the poorly person saved the day. It was incredibly impressive

fagsandwine · 15/10/2024 23:16

Cousin is irrelevant. Your child is unwell snd needs to be in her bed not a caravan. At least at home you can try to make some alternative arrangements for one or other until your dd is better... just accept this is not the break you planned instead of gritting your teeth through it. If she has a virus and a temp she'll be better quicker at home. We've cut short holidays when kids were ill and they were so happy to go home to bed

Jingleballs2 · 15/10/2024 23:18

Definitely sounds like covid to me, same symptoms as I had except for the rash. Hopefully she will get better quickly, didn't last long with my LO

Oh that’s a good idea, hadn’t thought of that. Thank you, and glad you had a good experience 🤍

I’m just worried she’ll rally by tomorow night and be so gutted to be home as travelled 3.5 hours to get here and it’s our first holiday in 2 years and I can’t tell you how much she’s been looking forward to it ☹️

They usually recover really quickly at that age. A few duvet days with Calpol and lucozade may well be all you need, you could still have the last few days to go out and do things. Card games, films and snacks until then.
Aches and pains aren't unusual with viruses (think flu or COVID, both rife this time of year).

Thank you - need sensible advice for my ridiculous panicky brain. you’re right, aches and pains do come hand in hand with flu and colds and fevers as we walk into winter.

There is a great clinic if you need it in Alnwick via 111 and also Berwick. I've been to Alnwick twice and Berwick once on holiday 😊- we are a holiday prone illness family!

Snuggle up and let them do caravan stuff - movies and hot chocolate for your niece - and relaxing. The castles aren't going anywhere and can be there next time.

back ache as others have said is probably just part of the virus. Is it carry’s on after she’s better - highly unlikely - get it checked out, but even then chances of it being something bad would be very small. Never trust Dr Google, he is cruel

fagsandwine · 16/10/2024 19:35

How are you all? I've had kids off school a week each so really fed up. It's been on and off temp and misery for them. A week each. There are horrible things going around. This weird humidity today where we are doesn't help.

LIZS · 16/10/2024 19:37

Uti might cause back pain, especially vulnerable after other illness

Whobestinmotherland · 16/10/2024 21:10

Oh you are the best 🤍
today been much better but still laid low. very much hoping we might lrwce
the Caravan tomorrow for our last full day 🤦‍♀️lucozade has helped a lot, as did hot choc suggestions! She’s eaten more today hurrah and managed the day without calpol tho giving her some now before bed in hope it lets her sleep without waking with a temp. she’s been sneezing a lot so assuming weird virus that’s just not quite shifted, but she’s been a much better colour today. Thank you so so much 🤍
