Rash hands, feet, bum

My 13 month old had a fever Friday, today (Sunday) I then noticed a rash on her hands and feet and also on her bum (not a nappy rash). Google says hand foot and mouth but the rash isn’t really blistery, more flat red spots. One blister on her thumb but she ducks her thumb non stop so maybe from that. As far as I can see, no ulcers in her mouth

I’d just like to know whether it is hand foot and mouth or not, so I can plan out to manage a week without childcare. Has anyone had something similar (ie rash but just on hands, feet bum, knees a bit) that was not hand foot and mouth? Or even though there are no blisters does this sound like it must be that?

she’s mostly happy but has periods where she’s crying in pain

Yep sounds perfect HFM. I've only ever known it to appear as red pin prick type spots rather than blisters on the hands and feet. The blisters were inside my mouth, as ulcers so check inside too

It does sound exactly like HFM. When my son had it, it started as red spots and then some turned into blisters where as others remained flat. He didn't get any ulcers in his mouth.

I would plan to manage without childcare as some nurseries/childminders won't take them if they suspect it's HFM (mine was sent home with just the red spots)

Thanks both. Apparently the advice from nhs is she can still go to the childminder but that just doesn’t seem right when it’s apparently so infectious! I doubt our childminder will have here anyway, as you say

I know, seems so strange that they would recommend it once the child feels well enough.
Mine wouldn't take him back until the spots/blisters had fully scabbed over. It is worth an ask, but I do think most will say no

Mine had HFM recently and it started with red spots in the nappy area. We didn’t need to keep her off nursery as she never had a fever and was generally well. You don’t need to keep them off as it’s so contagious that everyone who is going to catch it will have already caught it by the time it’s diagnosed as it’s contagious before spots appear. More than half of DDs nursery room already had it by the time we realised what it was.

Just to add this is our nursery’s policy and the reasoning behind the NHS guidance. Other child care providers will have their own policy.
