Fussy eater now has braces, what can he eat???

DS 14 is a really fussy eater. He will just not eat rather than eat something he doesn't like and is underweight as a result. Although our other kids eat normally, I was like this as a child so I try not to worry. But he got braces on Friday, and now is in too much pain to eat.

So far, he has had a little ice cream with some of his birthday cake mashed in, some very soggy chocolate cereal (twice), half an egg and a spoon of rice mashed with yogurt.

Are there any other really plain foods I could try? He won't eat mashed potatoes or soup normally, except cream of tomato and is worried about eating that in case it stains his teeth.

I am not sure where the balance should be between saying he can just eat ice cream for a week and letting him go hungry. I'm worried he will refuse to eat other food even when the pain wears off.

Noodles always went down well with my dd.
The pain will wear off and then he can eat his usual foods. Avoid hard or crusty foods. Give him pain killers to help

Give him lots of whatever he will eat. If that is a large bowl of ice cream every day, that's fine (according to DS' dietician). When DS was underweight the advice we had was to keep up the calories and not too worry about what it was they were eating, as long as they kep eating something. Would he eat instant noodles or cheesy pasta?

MamaChocoholic · 06/10/2024 12:53

He won't eat most cheese, but perhaps instant noodles are worth a try, thanks.

I'll try and let him fill up on ice cream then in the short term at least.

The pain should wear off quite swiftly. I agree with noodles. Does he eat spaghetti? Could do that with a tomato sauce with veg blended in .

I think mine had rice quite a bit when first tightened.

Tomato soup through a straw? Then it won't 'stain his teeth' (it won't anyway but will reassure him?).

Same situation here so following for ideas.

Mine loves really crunchy foods which isn’t much help.

My DD pretty much lived off Heinz tomato soup for three weeks (including being allowed a flask of soup at school for her lunch) while her 'train-track' braces were settling. It didn't stain her teeth at all.

Best of luck to your DS.

Is he getting painkillers like ibuprofen? I'd give him literally whatever he'll eat, it's only short term. Banana smoothies maybe.
In the larger scheme of things he'll be eating fine in the future.
Plain pasta cooked very well with scrambled egg beside it. It just things that need biting down on that causes the pain.
Tomato soup with white bread bits soaked in it.

MamaChocoholic · 06/10/2024 14:45

Oh that's good too hear thank you. He is currently working his way through a small pile of cold noodles, and we will try tomato soup and blended banana milk for tea!

I think given how he is eating the noodles pasta is still a couple of days away :)
