Can Hand Foot and Mouth be mild?

It has been going around DD2's nursery. She had a couple of pimples around her mouth, a couple in her nappy area and a couple behind her knee, but she can be quite pimple-y so I didn't think much of it.

DD1 started complaining of pain in her mouth today and she has a huge ulcer. She's never had an ulcer before.

Do you think this could be related to HFM?

I always thought it was meant to be quite bad, caused a fever etc but they're perfectly fine in themselves.

Our LO was fine with it the first time round. Barely knew she had it, just a few spots around her mouth. I was rough & my husband had it bad, took a lot of skin off his hands/arms.

The next time she had it the spots were mainly on her hands, think she lost her appetite but was okay in herself! She was then throwing up for some days a few days after the spots came out, think it was related but not 100% sure.

Hope your girls feel better!

Thank you! I didn't even realise you could get it twice.

It doesn't sound like it was pleasant for you and DH 😕 that's also partly why I am asking as I am going away this weekend for a week for work so could really do without catching it...

Anything can be mild.

yes my grandson has just had it and passed it on to my pregnant daughter ,( early stages thankfully ) . Both sailed through it with little in the way of symptoms.

We've had it plenty of times across two DC with a huge range in symptoms from fine but spotty to absolutely miserable.

VivaVivaa · 04/10/2024 20:25

Both of mine had it last week. DC1 was fine apart from being off acidic fruit because his tongue hurt a bit. A few spots on his fingers that didn’t bother him. DC2 was grumpy for a week, off food and had quite a few spots on his hands, legs and bottom, but wasn’t particularly poorly. He was still wanting to potter about and didn’t sleep anymore. I was the ‘sickest’ (in that I’ve been really fatigued, off food and achey) despite having no outward symptoms.

A friend and her DH got it last winter from their then 2 yo. My friend and her kiddo were ill for about 48 hours then fine. The DH was extremely poorly for a good 2 weeks and lost a lot of weight. Seems really variable even in the same household!

DD was fine, I was sick as a dog with it.

I don’t know if there’s a limit to how many times you can get it! I think it’s so contagious it spreads so quickly between nursery/preschool. Hopefully you manage to avoid it!
