Lots of illness from nursery

imaworrier1 · 01/10/2024 16:49

First time poster, my little boy is starting nursery and I am so worried that it's going to be constant illness for the next few months. I have severe emetophobia and I am so concerned for what's to come. Has anyone's children been fine after starting nursery?

My dd is 2 and has been in nursery for 18 months. We’ve had lots of coughs and colds. Lots. But no d&v yet.

papadontpreach2me · 01/10/2024 16:51

All children are quite poorly the first few months after starting nursery and with winter fast approaching you'll have winter bugs straight after the initial bugs.

It's hard on them (and you) but it's good for their immune system.

Honestly, I can deal with any illness except sick, my partner also works away so I am completely filled with anxiety over this. Thank you for your replies

My kids also got sick a lot... but colds etc not d and v

ADogChewingAnAntler · 01/10/2024 19:36

Unfortunately it will come at some point and you will have to deal with it when it does. That's the truth.

I am also an emetophobe but generally a LOT better nowadays. Honestly, having kids desensitizes you to it loads. I can now proudly say I ran towards my DD once and caught it in my hands.

StampOnTheGround · 01/10/2024 19:41

It's only really lots of colds we've had to deal with, haven't had D&V from nursery I don't think.

SherlockHolmess · 01/10/2024 19:43

We’ve had a couple of D&V’s - and I’m sorry to say this but we caught it as well. I don’t think there’s anything you can do to prevent it. Have you thought about any therapy or something to deal with the phobia?

HowMuchGravy · 01/10/2024 19:43

You should read up on activated charcoal to help prevent sickness spreading between family members. It's worked in our house.

imaworrier1 · 01/10/2024 19:45

@SherlockHolmess I know this is probably the most ridiculous question but do you know how I would go about this ? I've never had therapy before but I honestly feel I do really need it for this

@HowMuchGravy do you mind me asking where you purchased this from?

To be honest you learn to cope pretty quick with kids, you learned to change nappies without an issue didn't you? Somehow you can deal with your dc when it's hard to deal with others

HowMuchGravy · 01/10/2024 19:54

Most health food shops sell it, but this is the last one I bought. Do read up about it though.

But its not really something you can have too much of, just might cause a little constipation.

D&V is probably inevitable at some point but it certainly hasn't been regular for us. DS is 28 months and has been at nursery since 12 months. In that time we've had one D&V illness, dreadfully timed for during pregnancy for me, but manageable overall. Lots of colds and coughs. One episode of threadworms. A couple of sending homes for a fever which hasn't amounted to anything.
The best thing you can do is wash yours and child's hands when you get home, from anywhere but especially nursery, and same before any eating/after toilet and nappy changes.
Also ensure you're all taking multivitamins inc vit D so immune systems are as healthy as possible.

imaworrier1 · 01/10/2024 19:59

This is good to know @HiCandles, thank you. I'm very much a strict hand washer, everywhere we go because I am so worried we will get unwell. I can deal with any other illness, not that I want him to have them but I can cope with them. I'm just so so worried about sickness but hoping it's not as common as my head is telling me

Also, I have just ordered multivitamins aswell so hopefully that'll be a good help aswell and

Your GP is a good starting point. Cognitive Behaviour or ERP therapy can be helpful.

But you can and will cope. You learn that avoiding the phobia doesn't actually remove the fear...the fear will subside anyway regardless of if you have to deal with it or not. But your brain now thinks it has to avoid to feel 'safe'...it needs a little help with retraining!

SherlockHolmess · 01/10/2024 20:28

Yes I would say start with GP for signposting - but if it’s manageable financially you might get treated quicker if you go private once you know where to go.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 01/10/2024 21:42

Over the first year we only had d&v (only the v part actually) twice, each lasting less than a day. The six viruses causing fever and general misery were much worse especially as one resulted in a febrile convulsion. Lost count of how many colds we had on top of all that so it was a pretty miserable winter. I have stocked up on vitamins for this year including probiotics for both of us (don’t know if they do anything but worth a shot).
