Squinting

My ten year old has a strong squint. He has a pronounced astigmatism and all the optician said was to remind him not to do it. Does anyone have any experience of this? Reminding him doesn’t appear to be cutting it. Will he grow out of it, and if not, is there anything that can be done?

Does he wear glasses?

Yes he does.

What is his prescription and is his eye pointing in or out?
when did you first notice it and when did he start wearing glasses
has he ever worn a patch before.

My dd still had a noticeable squint even with her glasses on and ended up getting an eye operation to improve the appearance. She will squint when her glasses are off but her eyes are much straighter with her glasses on now.

Not sure of his prescription @theeyeofdoe but not too strong, and his eye is pointing out. He was investigated but cleared of something called Kerataconus. He has been wearing glasses for 4 years, and the squinting has been getting progressively more noticeable over the last 2. He hasn’t worn a patch.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Would a patch help?

What operation did your daughter have @dementedpixie ?

Patching only helps if the eyesight is poorer in one eye as the patch over the good eye forces the other one to work harder. Usually done at a younger age though.

My dds eye turned in. Her operation was to straighten the eye so I assume they did something to the muscles around the eyeball.

Edited

No, the patch wouldn’t help.
it may help if an optometrist near you does vision therapy or can teach your son to use a piece of (cheap) kit called a brock string.
Alternatively, he could be referred for surgery.
