I'd have that looked into. Try not to worry. But it is one of those things where you think, "You know what? I'll get a clinician's thoughts on this."

CherryValley5 · 24/09/2024 11:33

I’d definitely discuss it with your GP

BeCyanGuide · 24/09/2024 11:41

Thanks he has an appointment next month. Was just hoping for some reassuring stories so I don’t freak out for a month 😫

I would ask the GP. Our little girl was referred at her 6 week check for similar (although I can’t remember how deep the dimple was now) and we saw the paediatrician but she concluded DD was just hairy like her dad! They didn’t do any tests other than just looking at her. DD is in college now and her development has been absolutely normal, no problems whatsoever so ever.

BeCyanGuide · 24/09/2024 11:44

He is 10months and nobody has ever noticed it at check ups. 😔

Bless you OP. So hard not to worry but I hope my story helps a bit. DD is not particularly hairy now either, it was just a baby thing! Thinking of you xx

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 24/09/2024 13:29

Just to say, the hairy thing is rather normal. My eldest was born an Andy Garcia clone (just Google that hair!). He had some back hair on him! We used to quote Ivana Humpalot, "You are hairy! LIKE ANIMAL!"
Just to say, he's an adult now and has no back hair! Phew!

But the sacral dimple is worth getting checked, if only to put it to bed and forget about it.
My eldest was born with a dimple in his shin and I worried so much.
He's 10 years old and I still get a bit, "Hmmm" about it but it's nothing. I don't think he's ever really noticed it!
Some things are just 'things' and my hunch is that this will be your little one's case. Just a 'thing'.
Fingers crossed for uneventful, good news!

My little girl has 2 sacral dimples, one above the other which I think is pretty uncommon. One had hair and one didn’t. They were found at birth and she had an ultrasound on them at 2weeks and to check her spine and everything was fine.

She’s now 4 and they are still very prominent and she is a very hairy child! Lol but never caused her any issues though. Hope everything goes well and I’m sure it will be nothing to worry about!

Thank you all so much

That looks nicely low lying, and you can clearly see the base of it, which is two rather reassuring factors. Though clearly no substitute for actually being able to examine the baby.

IcedCoffeeQween · 12/10/2024 06:22

If this makes you feel any more reassurance, I have this. Tuft of hair and all. I have lived a healthy 29 years. I do get the occasional back ache but Tylenol and Motrin take care of it.

I have one. And my youngest does. She was 11 weeks premature and they found it the day we were going to be discharged. All of a sudden they all began panicking which set me off after 8 weeks in hospital.

It was fine. She had a scan etc. Hers is very deep and the skin dimple is a funny shape, bless her. But she's 11 now, a competitive ballroom dancer and never had any issues.

amothersinstinct · 12/10/2024 06:44

My daughter has one much deeper than the one in the photo. I can't actually see a tuft of hair in that photo I can just see normal hair. You can also see the base of the dimple very clearly so I don't think it's anything to worry about

Jifmicroliquid · 12/10/2024 06:48

I have one, but without hair.

No issues from it.

Crispppy · 12/10/2024 06:53

My son had this, discovered at a few days old. He had xrays which terrified me at the time, but no issue was found. 28 years later, my lovely sporty son has no awareness of this.

Aparecium · 12/10/2024 07:56

Two of my dc have this, as do I. The only issue has been that we had to clean their bums carefully, as poonamis often resulted in poo in the dimple.

I don't think what you're seeing is a tuft of hair, just normal newborn hairiness. Some babies lose it, others don't. The tuft associated with problematic sacral dimples is more distinct and much denser.

But this is your baby and you should trust your instincts and have an HCP look at it. Not because I think there's anything wrong, but because it's absolutely fine for you to worry that something is wrong, and be wrong. Much better than for you to distrust yourself.

I have this and Dd also has it. With Dd it wasn’t noticed at birth. Dh saw it on the postnatal ward and pronounced “she’s got a second bum hole like you”. We got it checked obviously and the paediatrician said it was a dimple.

then when she was about 4 months old I was bathing her and a friend who is a doctor was there and said it was spina bifida occulta. That was confirmed by the GP. They just said for the majority of people there are no issues but if we struggled with potty training to go back. She’s never had any issues whatsoever.

My daughter has one and it's nothing to worry about.

My son has one, he's 5 now and never had any issues with it x
