What is happening to my son's skin?

Hi there,

I come here out of desperation, hoping that someone here may have seen something like this before.

A few weeks ago my 18 month old son developed a white flaky rash on his hip, seemingly where his nappy had rubbed it. It got worse and worse and the skin started flaking away and looking a little raw. We were advised by GP and a specialist to put Elocon (a steroid cream) on it once a day for 7 days. We did that, and have been moisturising and using Sudocrem as a barrier so his nappy doesn't rub it.

There has been no improvement. The skin has become red, dry, wrinkled. The dark red discolouration appears to be spreading. I have stopped the steroid as there was absolutely no improvement.

I am sick with worry. The pictures show the progression. Does anybody recognise this?

It looks very dry so I wouldn’t use Sudocrem.

I wouldn't be sick with worry because the skin under looks healthy and isn't infected, scabby or oozing. Maybe it's a bit like a blister where the top layer dries out and sloughs off? Can you get a pharmacist to take a look?

Looking at the first photo, he had dry skin in the middle as well. What do you bathe him in or clean his nappy with?

Could he be allergic to the nappy? Could you try changing brand or trying a reusable type.

This I think.

He's either allergic to it or his daycare's using a different brand and he's allergic to that. Given the location it's hard to think anything else. More latex in the mixture or similar.

Appreciate its new but manufacturers change stuff. My toothpaste recently changed ingredients and it took a month of numb Angelina Jolie bee-stung lips to figure out what was going on. Cracking free lip fillers but most peculiar numbness in my mouth.

Down you find out what this was?
