Hey all,

hoping someone might be able to help or had a similar situation to put our mind at ease/find a solution.

Our daughter is 4 months old and around 9 weeks old she got admitted to hospital for severe dehydration which was caused either from the 1st set of vaccines or a stomach bug. (We took her to the GP multiple times with mottled skin and the diarrhoea and got told that it’s viral and should go home) we then that night noticed she was really unsettled, had a small seizure and then stopped breathing for 5-10 seconds. We called an ambulance straight away and they got us straight to the hospital where they treated her for severe dehydration, gave her antibiotics in case of sepsis and iv fluids. Eventually this switched to her getting more fluids through an NG tube. She started to recover 2-3 days later after being on the ward with fluids continued.

Fast forward to now and she is 4 months old and 4 weeks ago she has been having severe diarrhoea 6-10 times a day. We first took her in pretty quickly after what happened last time and they just said it was viral once again and it must go on for 2 weeks before they will do anything. We were at the hospital and they were satisfied with her feeds so they sent us home.

2nd trip to the hospital after two weeks as the poos continued 6-10 times a day. This trip they made the decision that she had Diarrhea because of a lactose allergy and they switched us over to try this for a week.

3rd trip to the hospital the poos still continued after switching to the lactose milk and now they have switched us to Neocate with added Gaviscon for reflux. Another two weeks and nothing is changed so we went back today really concerned on why things are not getting better!

We wanted more tests done to see if there was anything underlying but they insist that the bloods are fine and poo sample doesn’t show a bug/parasite.
They gave us 5 options for more testing but put us off most of them.
options :

  1. Camera through her mouth and bum to see her stomach and bowels but would have to be put to asleep. The risks were she might be in intensive care after the procedure! So this put us off straight away.
  2. Medicine for her Diarrhea but this was a banned drug in the UK and Europe but for some reason they offered this ?! Also they said the risk for anyone under 13 was a heart attack. So we wasn’t very keen on this.
  3. CT Scan (risks were the radiation on her which they said is dangerous) put us off again
  4. Ultra sound scan. (Which is the one we choose as low risk) however they said it won’t show much but I think they offered this for a peace of mind.

has anyone been in a similar situation or been stuck with the NHS on this ? We have stressed multiple times that things are not improving, also our home life is getting affected; lack of sleep, time of work and other child being neglected.

any help would be much appreciated

thank you

I hope you get some help with this soon this must be really worrying.

Apart from any investigations she has, I would ask the drs if you can give her probiotics. Our paediatrician told us that when they have diarrhoea they flush out all the good bacteria and this then prolongs the diarrhoea... a vicious cycle.

Hey, thank you for the response. We just recently got given Neocate Syneo which is meant to have added probiotics? Not sure if this is enough …

I'm not sure, maybe ask about something with different strains of bacteria too. Fingers crossed.

Hi OP, do you have an update, my LO is going through similar thing?

Test her poo for covid with a couple of different LFTs. The initial illness could have been caused by covid and the virus lingers in the gut and can cause GI problems. Many people are unaware that covid can present as GI symptoms.

Has she also been tested for rotavirus, if she got the first vaccine dose it's a live virus so there might have been some cross-contamination.
