Does this need to be seen urgently?

Are there any medical people on here? My daughter cut her foot 2 days ago from standing on a piece of lego on a hard floor. It bled, we cleaned it and put on a plaster. She was fine yesterday but is now complaining that it is sore again. I'm worried that it's infected as it looks like it's tracking. I've drawn a line round it and awaiting a call back from 111 but unsure whether I should just take her to A&E? It's about an hours drive for us so don't want to go if it's not necessary but also wouldn't hesitate to if I need to.

Hmm that does look sore, strange mark? Could be sore from wearing shoes/walking today? Is it hot, swollen? Does she feel unwell?

IMHO (worked in nursing for 10 years +), I wouldn't be overly worried, the redness doesn't extend around the circumference of the wound and it doesn't look inflamed/infected. Does your daughter have a temperature? If it was me I'd be inclined to take her to a pharmacy for advice in the morning, and just keep it clean and dry overnight. Hope that's helpful but absolutely use mum instinct!

I'd put some Germolene & a plaster on. Sock over it and see how it is in the morning. But if you don't have any of the magic cream (get some!!) but for tonight use something like savalon.

that looks like a sick or shoe mark, not tracking

is it hot, does she have a temperature

you're her Mum. Take her in if you're really worried.

hope it's better in the morning

I would probably be happy leaving it until tomorrow, maybe just putting a plaster on it for now.

It doesn't appear to be any warmer than the rest of her foot. She has done a lot of walking today, but about an hour before bed, she began limping and saying it was sore, which prompted me to check it again and saw how red it was. She doesn't seem to be unwell (other than the cold she currently has)

I would reassess in the morning after resting all night, perhaps just saw from the day and the red mark may be that she's been walking slightly differently due to it being sore.

She doesn't have a temperature. I just checked it, and it was 35.4 (which did concern me a little as I know sepsis can present at a low temperature) but the house is also quite cold tonight. I'll see what 111 says, and I'll keep an eye overnight. Hopefully I'll just be able to take her to be seen in the morning.

I wouldn't be going to A&E for that if I'm honest. Like others have said, put some germoline on it, perhaps some Nurofen to keep any inflammation at bay.

Killerqueenie · 13/09/2024 23:37

Thanks all. I drew a line around it, and it doesn't appear to be spreading further. NHS 24 called back and said it's reassuring that she doesn't have a temperature, it's not swollen or hot, and it's not weeping. They told me just to keep an eye overnight and take her to the pharmacy first thing.
