Underweight 9 year old - is this a bad daily diet?

My 9 year old has always been slim but more so the last few years, she’s now dropped a centile so I’m trying to get her to put weight on but seem to be failing! she doesn’t naturally like dairy or cheese.

breakfast
grapefruit with honey
1 slice white bread
2 x bacon rashers

snack at school
crisps

lunch at school
hot meal- today was spag Bol. Never convinced she eats much of school lunch.

Snack after school
3 oatcakes, handful of pomegranate seeds, bag of crisps

dinner
tuna and sweetcorn pasta
Carrot sticks
fruit frozen pole

supper before bed
potato scone with butter

shes eating as much as her older brother but just not putting on weight, often needs a poo after eating with some tummy cramps but been tested for coeliac/ chrons/ IBD and all bloods fine so gp not doing any further tests,

for reference she hovers around 24jg but goes up or down by 0.1 and that’s it ☹️

She weighs the same as my 11 year old, and also eats a lot more based on the daily diet you posted! My DD is on the 20th centile though so it doesn’t worry me, she’s just slim.
I’d be more concerned about the stomach pains though, and would push for more investigations.

It doesn't sound like she's underweight, and if she's consistently been slim, I wouldn't be so focused on her weight. Could her stomach pains be constipation? Does she drink enough fluid during the day? It does sound like she needs more fruit and vegetables, which may improve the stomach pains, if they're related to constipation. Two packets of crisps a day is also too much, unless you're deliberately trying to feed her high calorie food to get her to put on weight quickly.

So helpful everyone, thank you.
yes- guilty of agreeing to crisps etc just to get some fat / calories into her. She’s a pixie because she won’t eat creamy things or dairy etc (had an allergy as a toddler she grew out of) but it’s like the taste for it never came back. Hates cheese/ cream. Will eat humus but only a sparrow like amount.
totally take the Point about bacon ☹️just been desperate to feed her something she’ll eat in morning as she never wants breakfast.
tummy pains random and definitely something but she is an anxious kid so I do think a lot of them are anxiety related.
I think she may have some constipation as seems to go between pellet type poos to more diahhrea type and is very windy so I know that can be constipation. She’s good with her veg and I prob forgot to add in that she’ll eat broccoli/ cauliflower with dinner most nights. She also likes nuts so she has free access to them but only ever takes a handful.
i could definitely do better at batch cooking casserole with Chick peas etc. naturally I’m not a good cook but could try this and think she’d like it actually.

to answer another question- I’m now a size 10-12 but snack and eat badly due to stress of caring responsibilities. When younger I was a 6-8 but part of that was to keep up with slim peers ☹️I try not to weigh her too much as desperate for her to not get a complex☹️

Weight aside, I'm sorry but I think that's a pretty awful diet. So much carbs, and only 2-3 portions of fruit and veg? Two bags of crisps a day is ridiculous, crisps are a special treat. Unless bacon is an exception, that shouldn't be daily, it's full of rubbish, and processed meat is terrible.

@LetItGoHome there's nothing healthy about bacon, supermarket bread, ice poles and crisps. There's little in the way of fruit, veg or whole grains. Some grapefruit and sweetcorn are the only fruit and veg. Bacon is a class 1 carcinogen.

Goodness me. If you think most kids eat better than this then I think you are living on another planet.

There are empty calories and snack like foods. But she has a school lunch which will contain veg, even if it's hidden. On top of that she is eating carrots, sweetcorn, grapefruit, pomegranate seeds. That's just on one day. OP has also added she has broccoli and other veg most dinners.

It's not the diet of a saint, but in the real world most aren't. If you make your own bread and exclude all processed foods then good for you.

But from original post the OP seems very anxious and is seeing weight problems that aren't there. Thats the worry. I'm more concerned about eating disorders with the over fixation on weight which will rub off on her daughter.

I think she just needs to be cut some slack and given reassurance rather than telling her she is giving her daughter a terrible diet 🙄

MiddleAgedDread · 12/09/2024 11:24

Does she eat eggs? That would be better on toast than bacon for breakfast.
If she had a dairy allergy / intolerance as a baby it's quite likely that other things upset her stomach too. I would try more rice and potatoes than bread and pasta and see if it helps.

@LetItGoHome I don't think most kids eat better than this but that doesn't mean to say they should eat like this.
