Small baby...2nd percentile weight?

SUNshineBlueSkye · 03/09/2024 11:23

My baby boys just been weighed today and he's 14 weeks old. He is 4.76kg (10.4 pounds). I'm curious if any parents out there have babies in the 1 - 2 percentile and how much did they weigh at that age?

what did HV say?
how is he fed?
was he premature?

His doctors aren't concerned and he was born at 37 weeks 6 pound 3. They said he is on the small side and is a bit behind on his milestones but will catch up eventually. He's formula fed. I just wanted to see if anyone has similar experience with small babies and if they did eventually catch up and get bigger and achieve their milestones?

My sister was 6lb13 and birth and at 10 weeks she was 7lb10. She didn't reach the 0.4th until 1 and at 2 she jumped to the 50th.
I was 6lb4 at birth always on the 2nd percentile
Other sister 7lb something at birth always perfectly average. She's 3 years younger and we could often share clothes.

Adults we are all slim build and between 5ft2 and 5ft4! Our size as babies has little impact on our size as adults.

My daughter was on the 9th percentile until I stopped dairy and soya then she moved up to the 25th-50th percentile. She's 4 now still on this percentile for weight but only tiny in height and only on the 1-2nd percentile. I was told when she was on the 9th that she's just a 9th percentile baby but she started moving up as soon as I started removing her allergens. She was behind on her milestones until we removed allergens and she went on high dose reflux treatment. She didn't respond to sounds or smile until 17 weeks and at 16 weeks she scored as behind across the board in her 4 month assessment by 5 months she was average. She now meets most milestones on time but some things she reaches her milestones with her dress size rather than her actual age. Climbing stairs for example at 18 months her legs were too short so she still crawled up the stairs. At 2.5 when she went into 12-18 month clothes she was then able to walk up the stairs. She's 4 now and finding a school uniform to fit her has been hard as even some of the 2-3 stuff is too big but she doesn't let her size hold her back!

My LO was born 2nd centile (measured small throughout pregnancy and induced at 38 weeks). They were around 9th centile when last weighed (8mo ish).

Now 10mo and no teeth, not crawling.
We're still within a normal timeframe for the milestones so I'm not overly worried yet.
They are starting to pull themselves up and will walk along holding hands. Increasing signals and noises to communicate, good eater, plays well. I can see progress in the right direction.

I suspect we'll be on the later end of normal but a few extra weeks really doesn't matter. By the time they are in school they'll be waking, talking, dressing themselves and toilet trained (to more and lesser extents).

Hoping to read positive stories here too op. The small size does set me on edge over silly things.

Re-reading your numbers op, my DC1 was 5lb9 at 36+5.
Now 3.5yo, hit all milestones spot on and is very bright.

I think your centiles might be off though. Check it's been corrected with gestational age

My little girl was 6 and a half pounds when she was born. She lost a little over the recommended amount at her 5 days check up (I think she'd lost 8% and they are meant to lose up to 7%, it was a tiny amount!). We went back 2 days later and she was back within the safe range.

From then onwards, she was always around the 2nd percentile. She's 9 months now and 15lbs. She's a really good eater, she's just petite! Health visitors have never been concerned because she'd just stayed right on that 2nd centile line all along, they said she's just dainty and not to worry. It's only if they are dropping centiles that it's a concern.

She's meeting all of her milestones too. She's now crawling, pulling to stand, pointing and waving and said her first word at 8 months.

It used to really worry me and I'd go to each appointment hoping she'd gone up to the next percentile, but honestly I've stopped stressing about it. Some babies have got to be the small ones and she's absolutely fine.

Hi OP,
My little was born on the 0.4th centile at 37 weeks and continued on that line until he slowly starting putting on weight when he was weaned. He was always long.
He’s now just under 50th centile for weight and above the 75th centile for height (neither myself or my husband are tall). He was slow to crawl and walk, but now he cycles miles and is a strong swimmer, amongst many other sports. He’s bright as a button and loves school.
I look back at photos of him as a baby and can’t believe how tiny he was for so long! I remember the wonderful health visitor we had reminding me that someone has to be on the lower centile, just like someone has to be on the upper one, and they will all find their line.
