Toddler swollen belly?

ivy621 · 01/09/2024 18:22

Hello,
Does my toddlers belly look swollen or does it look normal? For reference she is 18 months old and this is not after eating, she has had a persistent high temp since yesterday morning and I can't help but think her belly looks swollen.
I will be making a GP appointment tomorrow, just wondering if her belly is actually swollen or am I overthinking?
Thanks! Photo attached

I think that's pretty standard. My daughter had a little pot belly until she was about 2.5-3 I think

SeashellCandle · 01/09/2024 18:55

I think that looks very swollen, nothing at all like a "little pot belly". You're right in getting it checked out. DD had constipation issues around that age and even during the worst phase (refused to poo for 5 days), her belly didn't look close to that size.

outdamnedspots · 01/09/2024 18:56

It looks swollen to me. But you're her mum and you know her best!

PoopedAndScooped · 01/09/2024 18:57

If you think her tummy is swollen - Combined with a temperature - A&E tonight

Bettergetthebunker · 01/09/2024 18:58

Could be the first signs of coeliac.

TheActualDuck · 01/09/2024 18:59

Looks swollen to me.
I think when you see them every day sometimes you can miss changes and dismiss them.
Trust your instincts.

TheChosenTwo · 01/09/2024 18:59

It’s hard to tell from pretty much front on HOW swollen it is, pot bellies are typical with small kids but in combination with the other niggles I’d probably be a bit concerned. Has she been constipated recently?

endofthelinefinally · 01/09/2024 19:00

Yes. Definitely swollen. Call 111 now.

mrsvandertrampfrench · 01/09/2024 19:02

Looks incredibly swollen to me - I'd get it checked out just in case

Changeiscomingthisyear · 01/09/2024 19:03

I agree very swollen.

Ozanj · 01/09/2024 19:05

Her tummy looks swollen and red. I’d definitely take her to A&E tonight.

Rory17384949 · 01/09/2024 19:13

It does look swollen yes, I would call 111 and see if out of hours can see her tonight because of the temperature - just in case

Evergreen90 · 01/09/2024 19:17

Hi, nurse here. I would advise ringing 111 tonight’s given the symptoms you describe. Hope all is well x

PoopedAndScooped · 01/09/2024 19:17

111 are uselsss - Dont waste time with them

A doctor in out of hours will only send you to A&E if her tummy is swollen anyway

ivy621 · 01/09/2024 19:18

Thank you everyone for replying so quickly, I'm feeling more concerned now so will ring 111.
To add as some have mentioned constipation, she has suffered from constipation quite badly and for the past two weeks has been on lactulose twice a day, since then she has been more regular.
Also she is okay ish in herself, she has still been playing but seems to have lost her appetite a little bit.
We have been giving calpol, yesterday it was bringing her temp down but then going back up a few hours later.
Her last dose was at 16:15 and it has not brought her temp down this time.

I’d take her to A&E. Don’t take any chances with a temp and a swollen tummy.

When did she last poo?
is she complaining of any tummy pains?
Any night sweats?

nopenotplaying · 01/09/2024 19:26

I think she has slightly mottled skin too so definitely worth calling 111

ivy621 · 01/09/2024 19:26

@Kirbert2 she poo'd this morning, she can't talk yet but she doesn't seem to be in pain.
She woke up a little sweaty a couple of nights ago, but generally no she hasn't had any night sweats
She has never had a temp without an obvious cause before, normally if it's she's got a cold/flu or something like that but there's nothing overly obvious the only thing I've noticed is her swollen belly.

I think her skin looks mottled too

Just go to A&E

excitedforbaby9 · 01/09/2024 19:29

if the last dose of calpol hasn’t touched her temp I’d be straight to a&e. That was my sons first sign of sepsis from invasive strep A. Not saying your daughter has that but there was no other signs for us apart from a non budging temp. If we would have left him that night he would have died 110%, it’s not worth the risk.
The temp paired with a tummy that swollen is absolutely A&E.
Hope your little one is okay x

Evergreen90 · 03/09/2024 23:29

Any update OP? Is she ok?

TheLemonFatball · 03/09/2024 23:34

We had this with DD9 when she was 2. She went on to have a rectal prolapse which terrified us, and after a few tests was diagnosed with Coeliac.

HerewegoagainSS · 03/09/2024 23:40

I would not be happy about this at all…
I hope the kid has been seen.

This is a clearly identifying photo posted on the open internet. Definitely take it down.

I don't think it's wrong to have her seen again by the same GP or a different one if you're still worried eg into next week. Blood tests may have a place depending on how the situation evolved, but the purpose of them isn't to put *your" mind at ease, it's to detect specific treatable illnesses. The most important investigation is time.
