Tonsillectomy .. is this normal?!

Hi all... wondering if anyone could tell me if it's normal that DD (9yr) is still in SO much pain on day 6 after tonsillectomy? Am giving her painkillers every 3hrs as she's crying in pain day and night, she's hardly eating and drank about 1/4 cup of water all day... I just can't force anything down her.
Her temp up and down, but maybe the pain killers are masking that, there's no blood or anything... she just cries that her throat and ears hurt. So worried about her not drinking

Any experience would be gratefully accepted!

Thank you! X

I don't know what's normal, but to get fluids down, try ice lollies. They help numb the pain.

Might be worth giving 111 a ring if you haven't got a particular number to ring for advice.

From experience (I had a tonsillectomy at 23 years old and one of my twins had tonsillectomy and adenoids removed 2 years ago when aged 4) day 10 is when things turn around! As long as her breath isn’t really foul smelling and isn’t bleeding, just focus on water and fluids for now and hopefully in a couple days she’ll spring back to herself x

If she has a temperature then it's probably worth speaking to a real life HCP to discuss whether she has a post-op infection.

Yes it's normal unfortunately. The pain seems to stay until the scabs come off so any day soon it will be like a miracle. Full meds and crying to suddenly no meds and a sore throat. Think it was around day 8 or 9.

Hang in there ❤

EDIT - the up and down temp is due to pain, not fever, usually.

Thank you all... I've had her seen by gp and can't see anything untoward, but if can't get her to drink then would be hospital for a drip, so am concentrating on that

Try jelly and ice cream. The jelly is full of water and slips down, the ice cream is cool and soothing. I think my 4yr old had it for lunch and dinner when she was at her worst so don't get fixated on "goodness" at this point. You want something to line her tummy for the pain meds, and something with a higher water content. Warm tomato soup is another good one if she'll try it.
