8 year old damaged adult teeth

My 8 year old son was playing football in the street and fell and cut his mouth. The top of his guns started bleeding so I took him the dentist yesterday and the dentist was concerned that there will be nerve damage to the 2 front adult teeth which will result in them turning grey and possibly requiring root canal treatment. Anyone else been through something similar and it's turned out fine

Similar issue with Dc1. It did not turn out fine, the dentist was right. Two root canal treatments and a filling required, one tooth is now grey, the other one is uncertain. At least one tooth likely to need full replacement or at minimum a crown later in life. It has made getting braces more complicated too, due to the additional pressure on the tooth that isn’t in entirely dead. We are saving up money for the cosmetic work later as likely to cost same as a small car by the time all the treatments are finished!

Like any permanent damage, you learn to live with the limitations (eg cannot bite hard food like apples).

There is a chance that a child’s tooth can recover - young teeth are still growing with a large nerve - but it will depend on the nature and extent of the damage. Make sure you consult a good dentist, if in doubt see one or two others for a second opinion. Dentistry is an art not a science and you will not get exactly the same advice from each dentist in my (now quite extensive) experience.

Very sorry for your child and hope he copes with any treatment ok.

I'm sorry, that sucks. Not quite the same, but I chipped my front tooth playing lacrosse (despite gumshield, the opponent's stick got a direct hit) 2 days after having braces that had been on for over 2 years removed. I was mortified and I still hate the capped tooth, but unfortunately these accidents happen and there's not a lot that you can do.

Ahh sorry to hear you went through this. The older I am getting the more I am realising how fragile our teeth are.

I fell on my front teeth as a child twice (once knocked my baby tooth clean out) and since have weakened teeth, needed a root canal and it's grey so want veneers.

However, my son aged 14 months fell off a toy bike (it tipped up) landing full on his mouth, bleeding everywhere and his left front tooth turned black then grey. I too was told the future of his adult teeth is uncertain and could be damaged. Luckily, aged 13 years, his teeth are large, pearly white and strong, dentist happy (and myself and son!)

I flipped by pedal bike aged 18, landing on my face with a lot of damage.

My top front teeth came out and were put back in with braces attached to them. I was told they would certainly be damaged and require root canals. At 21 my private dentist also said this, but I simply could not afford what they were asking so did nothing.

Over 30 years on they are the teeth I have had no problems with in my mouth - lots of others issues on others though.
