Possible coeliac?

Hi all, my sons 4 years old and since March he's been so up and down. Pale, more tired than he was before, but still has bursts of energy. Was very worried so got his bloods checked and they said slightly low iron levels but everything else was normal. Gave me sodifer which I gave him for 2 months but it made his feel rubbish most of the time so stopped. Need to do a follow up appointment about that.
But I think he might possibly be coeliac. His symptoms are as follows

  • pale
  • very tired at times
  • dark circles and red rimmed eyes
  • frequent belly aches
  • constipation (has got very frequent the last few weeks)
  • iron deficiency
  • seems to get ill a lot more often than usual
  • random Temperatures and feeling rubbish with no other specific symptoms pointing to a run of the mill illness. (had a temperature and felt rubbish last weekend, seemed to get over it and then temperature again this weekend)
  • not often but he threw up yellow bile last night because he felt quite unwell, not sure if related
-is small for his age
  • behavioural issues

All of these I've seen points to coeliac, so me and his dad have decided to cut it out and see if there's any difference. I will be taking him to the doctors to tell them my thoughts too.
Just looking for any experiences of this with a child of a similar age?
It all started quite abruptly after a horrible viral illness and knocked him for weeks and he's never seemed to fully recover from.

Thank you

Before you cut anything out, I'd see if the GP will do a blood test. The tests only work if you're eating gluten.

Ask for the blood test, it can be done at the same time as checking for iron. My DS is the same but has had negative scores on the test. He does have issues with adenoids though and sleep apnea.

If coeliacs is suspected it's absolutely crucial to not remove gluten prior to tests you need normal levels of gluten in their diet for 6 weeks for the diagnostic tests

It could also be other food allergies. I would go back to the GP and ask for more tests

I think celiac is a reasonable thing to ask about and discuss blood tests for (as has been mentioned, gluten needs to stay in the diet for the test to be reliable).

However except for celiac, these do not sound like allergy symptoms at all and I don't think there are "more tests" that could detect one.

Lots of these symptoms would come under delayed allergies. Black eyes or as they are often termed in allergy "allergy shiners" are seen with food allergies too

My daughter has delayed food allergies and she has stool tests looking for inflammatory markers which is an indicator of delayed allergies. She has had blood tests too checking on gut health.

Which tests on the stool? What blood tests check "gut health"?

Superscientist · 26/08/2024 19:27

I can't remember exactly which tested they did but they were looking for inflammation and signs of malabsorption due to 20 delayed food allergies and daily stomach pains despite a strict exclusion diet. They ran some blood tests and we had to collect stool samples over 3 days. The stools showed slightly raised inflammation but no malabsorption. I don't recall her paediatrician specifying what he tests he was intending to run just why he was running the tests. He said if she was having a continued reaction to an unidentified allergen her gut would be inflamed and she wouldn't be absorbing food as well which could have been contributing to her paleness and lethargy.

She previously had tests for coeliacs and her paediatrician tested for other things at the same time. This was 2 years ago so I don't remember exactly what he was looking for.

these are definitely symptoms for coeliac I agree. my child was seeing doctors and being tested for everything but coeliacs, from the age of 9 months and noone thought to do a test. By accident we found out when they were 16!!

Its a cheap easy test, tell your GP to do it.

In Italy every child gets tested, we are so far behind on this.
