How long can a temp last with tonsillitis?

My DD 4 has had a temperature since Saturday- ok in herself but said she had a sore neck. I took her to the walk in centre on Sunday morning when she woke up with her neck gland huge on the right side. GP diagnosed tonsillitis and prescribed antibiotics.

We are now on two full days of ABs but she still has a temperature of 39.5 ish once the nurofen wears off. Shouldn't it have started working by now?

She's eating ok and doesn't actually complain that her throat hurts to swallow, just her neck where the swollen gland is which I find strange.

I have awful health anxiety since my DS had meningitis at 4 weeks, of which the only sign was a high temperature so my mind wonders to the darkest of places.

She's happy to be playing in the garden when her temp is down but once it's up she just wants to sit and watch her iPad.

2-4 days in my experience. Ds5 has tonsillitis about 15 times each year and strep about 4 times each year. Hopefully after her first good sleep she'll start to return to a lower temperature and eat again.

If you're worried about hydration, my son is partial to a huge amount of apple juice when afflicted. He was never keen on ice lollies and went on milk strike with tonsillitis.

@Blessedbethefruitz I think that's my worry, we are now on day 4 and as soon as nurofen wears off it's straight back up again! She's slept well most nights but it doesn't seem to be kicking the temp.

She's fine in herself, currently jumping off the bed!

Is she drinking and eating and going to the loo ok? I'd be tempted to leave her if so, she's fighting it off, and everyone is different. Easy to say I know.

But call the gp or 111 if you're concerned.

My daughter had recurrent tonsillitis and it always took 3 - 4 days for the temperature to go back to normal after starting antibiotics. I always worried they weren't working at first.

Most tonsillitis is viral.

If the case your child has is viral, the antibiotics won't make a difference to the duration.

If it bacterial 48-72 hours should start to see a change.

From NICE guidelines:

All people with acute sore throat
1.1.1
Be aware that:
acute sore throat (including pharyngitis and tonsillitis) is self‑limiting and often triggered by a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract

symptoms can last for around 1 week, but most people will get better within this time without antibiotics, regardless of cause (bacteria or virus).

so 1 week seems likely for duration

Did they take a swab of her throat to check if it was bacterial? They should have done. It would be worth calling tomorrow if she's still getting a high temperature to see if it's definitely bacterial and if it is what bacteria in case it needs a different type of antibiotic

miniworry · 20/08/2024 21:19

@Rory17384949 no they never swabbed they just looked in her throat and said tonsils look red and enlarged with some spots and that was it. I've had a little look in there tonight and can't see any white spots, just very red and swollen!

I'll call the GP and see if I can get her booked in.

I'm so used to the temperatures being a 2 day thing max so it's really unnerving me!

My DS had it quiet bad we went to A&E and seen paedoateician but they were not concerned. This was in June it was 5weeks of hell. And he is still not 100% my Gp said that viral infections are bad this year and lasting longer.
Becaredul with AB if bot bacterial it will do more harm then good.
